Wominjeka! Welcome to Bruny Island, the hidden gem off the southeastern coast of Tasmania that will sweep you off your feet! If you’re planning for a fun-filled, adventure-packed day, be ready for breathtaking scenery, delicious food and friendly faces!

In this ultimate guide to Bruny Island, we'll take a look at some of the must-do activities, must-see attractions, and must-try food!

Getting there

Renting a car and exploring the island at your own pace is one of the best ways to get a full grip on the island and the stunning mystery that surrounds it. Hopping on one of the Bruny Island tours from Hobart is also an ideal option or better yet, hop on the vehicular ferry from Kettering and let it whisk you away to the island!

Exploring the south & north

Nature was really just freestyling and let its creative brush run wild when it made Bruny Island. Start your escapade at The Neck, a snap-worthy locale and home to the Instagram-favourite Truganini Lookout. The views here are so stunning that you ‘ll feel like you've been transported to a whole ‘nother world! Scale the summit and snap a selfie to prove you conquered this kingdom of quirkiness!

The Southern part of the island is where you wanna head to if you’re looking for food and adventure! The Labillardiere Peninsula Walk is like a treadmill in the middle of nature’s gym and will take you past some of the most iconic views of the coastline and D'entrecasteaux Channel. Expect Eucalyptus forests, coastal heathlands, and sprawling water bodies – they’ll make your jaw drop and not just because you’re out of breath from the hike! Just remember to lace up your hiking boots and don a comfy fit!

For nature’s greatest admirers

Bruny is teeming with wildlife and offers great encounters! Join one of the Bruny Island cruises and prepare to dance-off with Australian Fur Seals and dolphins, the island’s resident party animals. And if it’s during the whale watching you'll win the ultimate lottery of watching the migrating whales gently glide over the waters!

Don't miss the little penguins strutting their stuff after dark. Bruny boasts one of the biggest penguin colonies in Southern Tas, and these little guys sure know how to rock a tuxedo! (most of ‘em waddle ashore during July and March)

Culinary adventures

Bruny Island is renowned for its fresh local produce, delectable seafood, and unique culinary experiences. Indulge in a gastronomic journey by checking out its local oyster farms, where you can savour the finest oysters straight from the sparkling waters! Make a stop at the Bruny Island Cheese Co. to sample a range of artisan cheeses crafted with passion and expertise. Their artisanal cheese is so good that you simply can’t resist taking some of it back home!

Ready to wet your whistle? Bruny is also home to Australia’s southernmost vineyard, on the sleepy little settlement of Lunawanna. Bruny Island Premium Wines will take your taste buds on a rollercoaster ride of flavours. Sip on their award-winning wines while pondering life's deepest questions, like why the wine glass is always half full and where to find the hidden gems on the island. Pair your wine with some of the local delicacies which showcase the true flavours of Bruny Island!

Overnight plans?

If you have more time on your hands, an overnight stay is a must. Although there are no hotels on the island, there are numerous campsites, holiday homes and luxe lodges, which radiate the island vibes all-year! For budget-constrained travellers, I’d suggest staying at Captain Cook Holiday Park. If it’s a more sophisticated, mid-range/luxury they have several options, including the highly-recommended Adventure Bay Retreat.
