Jude PereraPublished 2 years ago in WanderThe Sweet Ballad of Beauty, Death, and no Wifi
When you look death straight in the face, forget about posting it on Instagram. On the right, the hissing sound of the river hundreds of meters below us reaches my ears. The narrowing small trail in front of me pulls all of my attention towards its ascending rocky pulse. At my left, I smell fresh green moss growing in the moist shades of the red stone wall rising above us like a massive cathedral. Trees and branches hide the immediate steep descent towards the valley and the river. I focus on the soft towing sounds coming from the hoofs of my horse Nasir, just centimeters from the abyss. This soothing rhythm will become my compass of faith and surrender for the coming 5 days as we ascent the North Argentinian Andes. Leaving our loved ones, our homes, and constant Wifi connection behind. We are about to meet the Indian spirit high up in the mountains. I am looking forward to this digital detox, but can't grasp at that moment that this trip is going to change my life forever.

After my first day or two in Costa Rica back in November of 2002, I knew that there was indeed something special about this country. I didn't know any Spanish at all. . ah, maybe, "Hola" or "Como Estas?". . but that is it. I just sold my business in the USA, sold my home and wanted to spend a couple of weeks relaxing, "away from it all"! And I did just that!

I’ve never been an avid user of Instagram. At most, I found it a platform I’d used to to hurriedly type “how to fix…” when I knew I made a true mess of things.

I love to travel. As a matter of fact, I did my share of visiting different places and embracing different cultures. But it was not before I discovered TJ’s vlog I found out that I was doing it the wrong way. My trips were usually short and were lacking all the colorful exotica and genuine enjoyment that is streaming from her videos.

TikTok has taken the internet by storm in the past couple years with its addictive layout, usability, and user-based content. It started out as Musical.ly, a place where users could upload videos of them lip-syncing or 'dancing' to songs. And later it evolved into TikTok, which still has much of that Musical.ly content but also many new forms of content and communities that are entirely different.
