The rhythm of raindrops, the scent of wet earth, and the cool embrace of the breeze — Sawan, or Shravan as traditionally known, is more than just a month in the Hindu calendar. This festival honors Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and will be celebrated from July 4 to August 31 in 2023.

A Time of Devotion to Lord Shiva

Sawan holds deep significance for devotees of Lord Shiva. According to legends, it was during this month that the mighty Ganga, on her descent to Earth, was caught in Shiva’s matted locks, preventing the world’s destruction. This act underscored Shiva’s role as the protector of the universe, and ever since devotees have commemorated this event with utmost reverence.

Every Monday of Sawan, known as ‘Shravan Somvar’, devotees observe fasts and offer special prayers to Lord Shiva. Temples echo with the fervent chants of ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, and believers seek the deity’s blessings for protection, prosperity, and spiritual growth.

Rituals and Poojas

Sawan is marked by a series of rituals and poojas:

Mangala Gauri Vrat: Celebrated by newlywed women, seeking the well-being of their husbands.

Rudra Abhishek: A ritual where devotees bathe the Shiva Linga with sacred water, milk, and honey, invoking the Lord’s blessings.

Kanwar Yatra: A pilgrimage where devotees fetch holy water from the Ganges to offer at Shiva temples. Every year around 12 Million people take part in Kanwar Yatra.

History and Significance

Legend has it that Lord Shiva drank poison through Samudra Manthan to get Amrit (nectar) for saving the world. However, Goddess Parvati held his neck and saved him from the poison which resulted in further pain and injuries to Lord Shiva.

A part of Sawan tradition is for Lord Shiva’s devotees to bring him holy water from the river Ganga so his wounds could heal. Moreover, fasts kept on Shravan Shomvar are called Shravan Shomvar Vrats and are kept to thank Lord Shiva and also to pray for prosperity, success, and marriage. Since this month is entirely devoted to Lord Shiva, many consider it his favorite month.

Puja rituals during Sawan

The Puja rituals may vary from culture to culture. But here are some of the basic rules and rituals, during Sawan month:

Wake up early in the morning, take a shower, and wear clean clothes.

Clean your worship place and decorate it with flowers before starting your worship process.

People worshipping at home can perform Abhishekam at home with ghee, curd, honey, milk, and water.

It is essential to maintain celibacy during Sawan month.

Prepare sweets and bhog to offer as Prashad to the deity and distribute the Prashad among family and friends.
