In India, 26 January is celebrated as Republic Day because it marks the date on which the Constitution of India entered into force in 1950, replacing the Government of India Act of 1935. Since then, India has been a Republic "for the people, by the people." The Preamble of the Indian Constitution guarantees the people's rights and responsibilities.

The Indian Constitution Assembly ratified the Constitution on January 26, 1950, with a democratic government structure, and our country became an Independent Republic.

A special programme is held on this day at the Rajpath in New Delhi, India. The Honourable President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Ministers from all states, government dignitaries, international guests and dignitaries, selected children from schools, and others graciously attend the function. It begins at the Rajpath and ends at the India Gate.

Republic Day History

During the Indian Independence Movement, India gained independence from British rule on August 15,1947. The Indian Independence Act of 1947 established India's independence. It is a British Parliament Act that partitioned British India into two autonomous Dominions of the British Commonwealth, which subsequently became the Federation of Nations.

Though India did not have a permanent constitution, its laws were based on the modified colonial Act - Government of India Act 1935, and on August 29, 1947, a resolution was passed to create a drafting committee to create a permanent constitution, with Dr. B R Ambedkar as the chairperson.

A final draft constitution was prepared and submitted to the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947. After various changes and consideration, an assembly of 308 members signed two copies in English and Hindi on January 24, 1950, and it went into force across the nation.

On January 26, 1950 Dr. Rajendra Prasad was elected President of the Indian Union. The Constituent Assembly became the Parliament of India under the new Constitution's transitional provisions, and January 26 was celebrated as Republic Day India.

Significance of Republic Day

Republic Day India celebrates the formation of India's Constitution on January 26, 1950. Following the country's independence from British administration on August 15, 1947, a drafting committee was formed to create an independent constitution under the direction of Dr. BR Ambedkar. The day commemorates the power of independent and individual India, as well as the right of Indian individuals to democratically elect their government.

The day is observed as a National Holiday in India commemorate the adoption of the Indian constitution.

Republic Day Parade

Flag hoisting events and parades by the armed services and students are staged around the country on Republic Day. The most spectacular and important parades are conducted on Rajpath in New Delhi. It depicts a multicolored picture of the country's rich cultural legacy and military power.

The procession is headed over by India's President. One of the main goals of the Republic Day Parade is to pay respect to the martyrs who have given their lives for the country and to bestow bravery medals on military personnel, citizens, and youngsters who have demonstrated courage in the face of adversity.

The Prime Minister of India first lays a wreath on Amal Jawan Jyoti at India Gate in memory of all members of the armed forces who have lost their lives for the country. Following that, there will be a 21-gun salute, the unfurling of the National Flag, and the singing of the National Anthem. Following that, bravery award winners receive awards such as the Paramvir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, and Vir Chakra.

The republic day parade begins with winners of gallantry awards greeting the President in open military jeeps, followed by a display of numerous tanks, missiles, and other military equipment. The march-past of several armed services units, police, Home Guards, and National Cadet Corps follows. The salute is received by the President of India, who is also the Supreme Commander of the Indian Armed Forces. This is followed by a colorful parade featuring tableaux from many states and patriotic students performing cultural dances.

Children who have won the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar ride vibrantly ornamented elephants past the audience. The Indian Council for Child Welfare honors and awards these youngsters for remarkable acts of bravery and great sacrifices.

The Republic Day Parade concludes with daredevil motorcycle riding and a flypast over Rajpath by Indian Air Force fighter planes while onlookers watch on with pride.
