Una Via
I didn’t believe it for a minute. I mean, come on; it was Cancun for God’s sake, a city as about as hazardous as a park bench. So as my family and I walked to a restaurant near the lagoon, I was convinced those “Danger: Crocodile Zone” signs we kept seeing had to be some kind of wink-wink photo op for dumb tourists already juiced on a bucket of Coronas and a week’s worth of sunshine. And I totally got the joke: smiling and half-cocked, some moron would hug the sign while an equally be-slathered gringo snapped off a couple shots to email back home to relatives in Minnesota still shoveling out their coal bins. They’re nuts, they’d say between stamping their feet and blowing into their hands to stay warm. And then they’d smile; jealous.

Alabama Gulf Coast Prehistory
Several years ago, my wife and I were sitting on the beach in Orange Beach, Alabama. I like to keep busy even when I'm resting, so I was casually sifting sand through my fingers. When doing that, I usually find tiny seashells or fragments of larger ones. This time I felt something different and being an avid arrowhead hunter, I knew what it was: worked stone. In about five minutes, I had found a half dozen broken arrowheads and knives.

The Art Deco Era of the 1930’s, Lives On in the Shadows of Miami Beach.
The 1930’s may be long gone but the vibes of the Great Gatsby era live on in Miami Beach. Miami Beach was the party town for the rich and famous. Home to glamorous flapper girls, mobsters, like Al Capone, hidden casinos, and Hollywood stars. Today Miami Beach is a preserved gem of beautifully restored Art Deco buildings. South Beach is a neighborhood within Miami Beach, and is home to many boutique hotels and trendy restaurants. This is thanks to the crusade led by Barbara Baer Capitman. She recognized the importance of preserving these works of art and in 1976 founded the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL). In 1979 the Art Deco Historic District was born and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Thus becoming the nation's first 20th century urban historic district.
