When people visit Sri Lanka, they have a tendency to travel to some of the most popular destinations that are widely promoted. Kalutara is one such location that offers a lot of sightseeing and history within a small radius making it an ideal stopping point during your time in Sri Lanka. Be sure to take in the nature, culture and history that awaits!

Visit the Kalutara Bodhiya

When it comes to visiting Sri Lanka, you will find a range of artefacts that stems from the nation Buddhist communities and one such location is the Kalutara Bodhiya. This location is a place that is deemed to be a destination that is a must-visit for any ardent Buddhist and as such is a popular domestic tourist attraction as well.

It is believed that the temple has been in existence since the 2nd century BC and is home to one of the 32 Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi saplings which adds to the spiritual value of the location as well. If you have never visited a temple before you will be able to understand the type of architecture that is involved and be able to learn more about the history of this religion as well.

The Richmond Castle

If you are staying at the Anantara Kalutara Resort and are looking for places to visit in Kalutara then one of the locations you simply cannot miss out on is the Richmond Castle. This is located near Kalutara city and is an Edwardian Era mansion with a history that dates back to the early 1900s. It was designed with the purpose of being a home for the Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena.

As of today, it is considered a major tourist attraction within the region. This two-story house was designed to have 16 rooms and remains a unique structure within the Sri Lankan architectural style. Much of the elements of this building had been brought into the nation from various other countries. For example, the floor tiles were brought in from Italy, the glass decors from Scotland and the iron stairs from England.

While much of this building has fallen to the test of time there is still many aspects of the structure that is striking and well worth a visit for a glimpse into a bygone era of grandeur.

Be sure to hit the Kalutara Beach

For the most part, many people who visit the city of Kalutara spend much of their stay lounging by the majestic beach that is amongst the finest on the island. The beach is easily accessible from Colombo which makes it an ideal location for many visitors and is generally filled with people unwinding under the sun.

Once you are at the beach, you will be able to witness the beauty of both the northern and southern sides, which showcases both Mahawaskaduwa and Katukurunda. Additionally, the beach itself is unspoilt making for a great experience.

Go chase some waterfalls

The Thudugala Ella Waterfall is a major landmark in the region and experiences a large volume of visitors. In terms of height, the waterfall ranks 268th out of 382 waterfalls in the nation. Many people who visit the waterfall will find themselves bathing amidst the nearby British estate and is also an ideal location for bird-watching enthusiasts as well.

If you are looking for a little bit of hiking and nature in the close vicinity of a busy city then this is the ideal location to head to in order to get away from the noise and clutter and unwind in the midst of nature.
