How does one appreciate the natural world?

Appreciating the natural world means noticing it, combining with it, and then relaxing into it. Noticing the inherent beauty of nature is the first step. It’s good to pay attention to the small details and textures of plants, animals, the sky, etc.

The next step is combining with it and that can mean a number of things. Combining with the natural world could include letting it fill your mind with whatever it is emitting to you. It could also mean physically placing yourself on the earth or sitting in a tree.

The last step would be to completely relax into it. Relax into whatever the natural world is emitting to you by objectively surrendering to it. Don’t judge it or impose your own ideas on it.

This enables you to experience the true value of the natural world. And you’ll understand how you’re not at all separate from it.

There are a number of ways in which you can notice, combine, and relax into the natural world.

Go For a Nature Walk and Appreciate the Natural World

Taking a nice nature walk or hike can help you notice and combine with nature in a direct way. You become a part of it as you interact with the plants and animals inhabiting that natural space. If you begin relaxing into your surroundings, the unity between you and the natural world will be revealed more and more with every step.

Nature walks have been one of my favorite pastimes. Seriously, what’s not to like? You are able to see a bunch of wild animals. I live in an area where there are many deer. I constantly see them on nature walks and am blown away by their grace. They’re such pretty animals in my eyes and I am thankful to be able to see them so often. Unexpectedly seeing different critters is always fun and it’ll keep you alert.

Nature walks are also fun because of the plants that inhabit the area. Unless you’re a plant expert, you’re bound to see something worth your attention on a nice nature walk. You’ll combine with the plant, animals, and your surroundings by giving it your attention. And you can relax into them by being still in your mind and not judging anything you’re experiencing.

Open Your Window

The simple act of opening a window on a nice day is completely underrated. When you’re not able to get outside, opening a window can provide the connection to the natural world that you crave. You are still able to notice aspects of nature from a window. Whether it is a bush, a fox, or the sun, the natural world is always available for observation.

You can combine with these aspects of nature by simply letting it fill up the room and your mind. And you can relax into it by taking a moment to be still and let it impose itself on you.

What you will be met with is totally unique to you.

But I can say that I have always been amazed at the impact it has had on me.

I love opening a window when I am cleaning, reading, writing, or relaxing. But really, any time is a good time to have a window open. I enjoy the cool breeze that often slips in. I love hearing the birds sing their melodic, neverending songs. Watching the trees sway in the breeze is a wonderful sight. And allowing the sunlight in the room makes everything more vibrant and lively.

It’s incredible how simply opening a window can let in so much goodness. It can change your mood for the better instantly. Even when it’s a cold, rainy, or snowy day, opening the window can be worth it. Hearing the fall of rain or seeing outside covered in a blanket of thick, white snow can be comforting to some.

Now, where you live does come into play here. If for some reason your window is in front of a big brick wall or you live in a big city where the air pollution is high, this might not be a good idea. Instead, try taking a nature trip.

Take a Nature Trip and Appreciate the Natural World

Taking a nature trip is a fun way to be close to the natural world. It’s like visiting a good friend. A vast, good friend.

Taking a trip with the intention simply to connect and appreciate the natural world will prove fruitful. If you happen to live in a place that isn’t very nature-friendly. Consider taking a trip to somewhere that is.

Decide what aspect of the natural world you like the best and find a place that reflects that. For instance, maybe you’re like me and you love grassy plains and tall trees. Or perhaps you really like large bodies of water. Maybe you like warm sand or large mountains.

Whatever it is you like, take the time to plan a trip to where what you like is abundant. It is no accident that you prefer one aspect of nature over the other. It is likely that your preferred feature of nature could perform miracles on you and through you.

Genuinely noticing, combining, and relaxing into the natural world will always have a miraculous effect.

As I have mentioned above, I am really drawn to grassy plains and tall, green trees. Whenever I am on a grassy plain or near many tall trees, I am met with a wave of ease and beauty unmatched by anything else. It feels like heaven.

Any worry I had begins to fade and new, wonderful perspectives flood my mind.

Climb a Tree

Climbing a tree is also an underrated way to connect with the natural world. It enables you to have a different vantage point, both physically and psychologically.

If you’re climbing a tree at home, perhaps you are able to see your hometown from an entirely new perspective. One that you didn’t have access to until you climbed the tree. Maybe the view has inspired you to look at and feel things differently.

You are unable to notice things you haven’t before. You are also able to combine with the tree and the surrounding natural elements in a direct way.

I personally love trees. Climbing them or simply sitting under them while having a picnic or reading a book is another level of peace. I get some of my best ideas when I am surrounded by trees. I am inspired and often get flashes of beautiful ideas to the forefront of my mind. It is quite incredible.

Concluding Thoughts

You appreciate the natural world by noticing it, combining with it, and then relaxing into it. The main thing is to have a pure intention to appreciate the natural world.

There is great benefit in being surrounded by the natural world. (I speak about some of those benefits in detail here.) Depriving yourself of the natural world could make you feel disconnected from your own life.

Nature has a way of bringing you back to the here and now. It has the means to replenish you from the inside out. Restore what you may have thought you lost. It is for these reasons that it is imperative that a deep appreciation for nature is cultivated within us.

There is a myriad of ways to be able to connect with nature and they all are valid. It is best though to try and surround yourself with the aspects of nature that you naturally gravitate to. There is always a deeper purpose of why you are attracted to certain things. And within the realm of nature, perhaps that aspect of it has something to share with you.

You’ll be able to receive this gift when you are able to appreciate the natural world and hold it in your respects.
