Greece is usually a popular destination to travel to in Europe, especially during the summer season. There are many travelers that are first timers, or sometimes people who make it an annual tradition to travel there.

Like any other country you'd go to, there are some things you should know about the culture itself. So here are a few things you should know about Greek culture before you visit.

Never show the palm of your hand (like a high five)

Every culture has a different gesture that can be offensive. When you show the palm of your hand (like a high five) especially in someone's face, it is an offensive gesture, as if you are cursing at them. Instead, use the back side of your hand when you want to gesture something such as thanking a car that stopped for you, or ordering something for five people.

Greeks like to start things late

Are you used to having dinner early and then heading out for a couple of drinks? Well, in Greece it doesn't exactly work like that. When it comes to socializing and drinking, the locals tend to go out at a later time, usually starting from 10pm and they enjoy their strong spirits with meze dishes. They also don't like to rush when drinking, because they like to talk a lot and take their time to enjoy the food and drinks.

Be ready for big portions

If you are planning on going out of your comfort zone and you want to try the local cuisine, be ready to have a big appetite. The local tavernas usually serve food in big portions, and even the local gyros shops serve gyro wraps as a big portion too. Greeks love to eat, and they eat a lot.

Everything runs on 'Greek time'

If you're used to having fast and efficient customer service, then you might feel a little frustrated when dealing with service workers in Greece. They like to take their time, there isn't really a proper order and they can sometimes be rude. Be ready to grow some thick skin when dealing with customer service in Greece.

Another tip is that if you're planning to meet a Greek friend in Greece, they will probably turn up later than the time you arranged with them. Greeks like to go with the flow, which can sometimes result in running late too.

Coffee culture is very big in Greece

Once you arrive in Greece, you will notice that there are a lot of coffee shops. There are certain big franchises that you will notice everywhere, and also small businesses too. One thing you must know is that the locals love coffee. They would choose it over a meal for breakfast, and they will drink it until just before they go to sleep.

They also like to socialize over coffee and to take their time to drink it, so don't be surprised to see coffee shops packed with people throughout the day. That's how they usually socialize there.

Even if you don't like coffee, you must try the coffee at least once in Greece, since it's very different from how coffee is made in other countries. They have a system of choosing how much sugar you want: no sugar (sketo), a little bit of sugar (metrio), or a lot of sugar (gluko).

Something to think about

Greek island life can be very different from city life in Greece. Depending on your personality, you might enjoy the bustling city life or you might enjoy the quiet and peaceful island life. Either way, it is important to keep these things in mind.
