By the time we made it to New Jersey on our trek across the US, we had been on the road 46 days. Randy needed a break from driving the motorhome so we parked at Butterfly RV Park in New Jersey with the plan of driving to the attractions and leaving the motorhome parked. Honestly, I was so fixated on the attractions in the area that I didn't give much attention to where we were staying. What we found upon arriving was a pleasant surprise.

The park offered secluded sites surrounded by trees. Paths guided us into the forest on a carpet of multicolored leaves. The dogs loved the long walks each morning and evening. There were many children present in this park and it reminded me of the many camping trips with family over the years. One night there was a party sponsored by the owners. Visitors gathered around a campfire, danced, and socialized. For one evening everyone became best of friends as we enjoyed the sights of fall and the crisp night air.

The owners developed this park with families in mind and provided entertainment in many forms.

The dog park even went a step beyond the norm by having toys, fresh water, structures for climbing and in our case photo ops.

When we did venture out, we headed to Philadelphia, an hour's drive. The Ben Franklin Bridge beckoned to us and when we unintentionally missed a turn, we found ourselves paying $5 for the honor of crossing the bridge, turning around on the other side and crossing back over. Must watch for those toll roads as they can sneak up on a person.

The first stop was Independence National Park where within a few blocks visitors see artifacts symbolic of the beginning of the United States. Numerous building outlined events from revolutionary times. The Liberty Bell Center shared not only the historic bell but its history in pictures and words.

Reading the signs is important to find the gems that are hidden among the busy paths. One sign pointed out the site of the Golden Fleece Tavern where on December 7, 1787 Delaware became the first state to ratified the Federal Constitution. At a nearby cemetery we stood beside Benjamin Franklin's grave.

After our day at the historical sites, we were both hungry for food and experiences. We desired a more modern representation of Philly so we asked a clerk where he would recommend we eat and visit. He spouted off a list but said his number one suggestion was Reading Terminal. Since I had not read about this place in any of my research, it peaked my curiosity.

We walked the distance to discover a large building that was once a terminal now functioning as a home for numerous restaurants, each boasting a specialty. The long line in front of Spartaro's might dissuade some, but for us it was a signal that they must be good. The Philly Cheesesteaks were irresistible and delicious.

Our day ended back at Butterfly RV Park where we walked that dogs and planned to visit the Atlantic City Boardwalk the following day. The boardwalk is the first and longest ever built in the US in 1870. It was a crisp fall day so we found the area not very crowded. Also it was the end of the season, but most of the stores were open. We spent time walking the beach and enjoying the surf.

Large, expensive casinos provide the backdrop for the boardwalk reminding me of a miniature replica of Las Vegas. I suppose this could be a family destination vacation, but for my tastes it was a little too commercial and created a feeling of apprehension. With children, I would opt for a more isolated, peaceful environment.

This leg of our trip build positive memories while allowing us to explore an area we had heard about but never visited. Follow us on Vocal Media or Facebook to read about our journey across the US in a motorhome.
