5 Things You Should NEVER Do on Catalina Island

Number 3 Is Shocking

By T Rain AKA Edger Ai BingtonPublished 3 days ago 2 min read

Ever been to Catalina Island? Yea, me neither. The title says it all, I don’t know if I can follow all those rules. And please notice, there are no numbers in the article, so you’ll have to guess on number 3.

The brochure says: Catalina Island, a gem off the coast of California, offers visitors a picturesque escape with its charming towns, lush landscapes, and vibrant marine life. While it's a destination that promises adventure and relaxation alike, there are certain things travelers should avoid to ensure a pleasant and respectful visit. Here are five things not to do when you visit Catalina Island:

Don’t Ignore Local Wildlife Regulations: Catalina Island is home to a variety of wildlife, including the famous Catalina Island fox, which is endemic to the island. It’s crucial to respect wildlife by keeping a safe distance and not feeding any animals you encounter. This helps protect the natural behavior and health of the wildlife. Additionally, when snorkeling or diving, avoid touching or disturbing marine life and coral formations.

Avoid Bringing Single-Use Plastics: Catalina Island, like many small islands, has limited resources for managing waste. Visitors are encouraged to minimize their environmental impact by avoiding single-use plastics. Bring reusable water bottles, bags, and other sustainable products. The island has water refill stations and recycling facilities to help reduce waste and keep the island clean.

Don’t Take Anything from Natural Areas: 3 While it might be tempting to take shells, rocks, or artifacts as souvenirs, removing these items can harm the ecological and historical integrity of the island. Instead, take photos and leave the environment as you found it. This ensures that Catalina’s natural and historical sites remain intact for future generations.

Refrain from Overpacking the Itinerary: Catalina Island is a place to unwind and enjoy the slower pace of island life. Overpacking your itinerary can lead to a rushed experience that detracts from the island’s relaxing nature. Allocate time to simply enjoy the scenery, perhaps with a leisurely walk-through Avalon, a picnic at Descanso Beach, or a quiet hike on one of the island’s many trails.

Avoid Only Sticking to the Main Tourist Areas: While Avalon, the main town on Catalina Island, is full of attractions, dining, and shops, exploring less-traveled parts of the island can provide a more fulfilling experience. Venture outside the town to experience more secluded areas like Two Harbors, or take guided tours that offer insights into the island's unique ecosystems and history.

By keeping these points in mind, visitors can enjoy all that Catalina Island has to offer while preserving its beauty and charm for everyone to enjoy.
