Statues in the United States that Honor Women

Real women. Women who lived.

A couple years ago there was a big movement to fund-raise and commission the installation of more statues here in the United States of women. Not just a statue that represents the female gender but statues of real women who lived. Who had a name and that we wish to honor with a monument.

While the majority worked on that I, the curious type, set out to find statues of real women that already had a statue. Who are they? Where are they? I want to go and see them. I want you to go and see them too. So I wrote a book, a sort of travel book. The first part of the book profiles 267 women who are honored in some way throughout the United States by a statue, a historical marker and many have entire museums. Do you love museums? I do! I had no idea all this was right here in our backyard until I began to do the research.

Just as interesting are the following statistics I gathered for you:

The women honored across the United States were born in a total of no less than 20 different countries:

There was a portion of the women with an unknown birthplace.

  • About 284 of the women were born in the United States.
  • Nine were born in the United Kingdom.
  • Six born in Canada.
  • Four ladies were born in Italy.
  • Three from Germany.
  • Three from Ireland.
  • Two from Mexico.
  • One from Africa.
  • One from France.
  • One from Chile.
  • One from China.
  • One from Egypt.
  • One from The Netherlands.
  • One from Lithuania.
  • One from Ukraine.
  • One from the Roman Empire.
  • One born in Russia.
  • One born in Poland.
  • One was born in Luxembourg and one was born in North Macedonia.

State by state I also listed memorials and monuments to Women Veteran’s, Pioneers and more. I found and included 62 museums throughout the United States that honor women or an individual woman. I hope you will check them out! You will find many Historical Markers throughout the book that marks the spot of an important site honoring a woman.

How many statues of real, individual women are in each state? More statues are being commissioned in various areas. The following is what I have documented here in this book.

Twelve first ladies are among the profiles with various monuments, statues, historical markers and museums.

• Sacagawea has a total of 9 statues in the United States.

• Mother Teresa comes in second with 7 statues.

• Harriet Tubman comes in at a respectable 3rd place with a total of 6 statues.

I included the date of birth for each of the women I profiled. The women span a period from being born as early as 69 BC during the Roman Empire to the most recent born in 1978.

The 62 museums across the United States range from free standing museums to beautiful birthplace homes that would make for an enjoyable trip. The museums are located in the following states:

Oh the places we will go! In the back of the book I included a state index showing all of the sites you can visit within each state. Web site and street addresses are included so you can plan your trip to visit statues, parks, historical locations, museums and historic homes. Each honoring an individual woman who contributed something to the progress of women throughout history. Some of the women are still alive today!
