Pitt, Lady Vols, Temple win openers

Nov. 10

Pitt 82, Radford 63

Pitt outrebounded Radford 58-23, as it won its season opening match at home. Reserve Liatu King came off of the bench to yank down 10 rebounds, with four assists in 14 minutes of action. Transfer reserve Mary Dunn had eight rebounds in 15 minutes. She also scored 11 points in her debut as a Panther. Pitt was led by Jayla Everett's 23 points as she knocked down three triples on five attempts. Emy Hayford had a near perfect night, going 7-8 from the field. She scored 15 points with three assists, three rebounds and a steal.

Radford was led by Ashley Tudor who scored 12 points off of the bench. She struggled shooting 2-9, but shot 8-8 from the free-throw line.

Princeton 59, Villanova 42

Princeton stunned host Villanova, behind a 21-point, nine-rebound effort by Abby Meyers. Princeton blocked eight shots as a team, fueled by Julia Cunningham who had three rejections. While the visitors struggled shooting 34 percent from the field, it limited Villanova to 26 percent overall shooting.

The Wildcats star, Maddy Siegrist struggled, scoring just 10 points, shooting 5-17. She also missed all four of her three-point attempts. Villanova was led by Brianna Herlihy who scored 12 points, shooting 4-9, including 2-3 from three. The rest of the team shot 3-19 from long distance.

Tennessee 59, Southern Illinois 49

At the start of the fourth quarter, Tennessee was down 42-38 to visiting Southern Illinois. The Lady Vols gave their 5,951 fans something to cheer for in the fourth quarter outscoring their opponents 21-7. Tennessee's Alexus Dye posted a double-double with 13 rebounds and 12 points. Jordan Walker scored a team high 14 points and Rae Burrell had 12 points on 6-9 shooting.

Southern Illinois outshot Tennessee from three and it helped to keep them in the game. Tennessee shot a miserable 2-15 from three. Southern Illinois made 38 percent of its three making eight on 21 attempts. The Salukis got 13 points from Quierra Love who shot 3-4 from three. Reserve Caitlin Link shot 3-3 from three, scoring nine points.

Nov. 9

Cal State Fullerton 71, Southern Utah 69

Lily Wahinekapu scored 20 points and dished out seven assists, leading Cal State Fullerton to a comeback victory over visiting Southern Utah. The host Titans were down 55-50 at the start of the fourth quarter before center Ashlee Lewis scored six of her 18 points in the final period to get the win. Lewis led Cal State Fullerton with eight rebounds and two blocks. Transfer Fujika Nimmo scored 14 points, grabbed four rebounds and collected one steal in her first game as a Titan.

Southern Utah was led by Daylani Ballena who came off of the bench to score 16 points. Starting Southern Utah guard Cherita Daugherty scored 13 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, with four assists and two blocked shots in the loss.

Temple 73, Saint Francis 53

Jiselle Thomas and Mia Davis combined for 38 points in Temple's season opening win. Thomas led the home team with 20 points on 7-11 shooting. She was a perfect 2-2 from three and 4-4 from the free-throw line, with three steals in the win. Davis had 18 points with four rebounds and two steals. Temple had 40 points in the paint and 15 second chance points compared with Saint Francis' 18 points in the paint and six second chance points.

Saint Francis was paced by Kaitlyn Maxwell's 21 points. She shot 8-11, including 3-4 from three. Her bright performance wasn't enough as her team turned the ball over 28 times and was limited to eight assists.
