NCAA Opening Night for Three!!!

UCF 68, Duquesne 39

Central Florida found itself in a tie with Duquesne after the first quarter at 14-14. At the half the Knights only led 24-22 but the second half was one of doom for the visiting Dukes. UCF point guard Diamond Battles had 16 points, shooting 4-6 from three-point land. She also had five rebounds and five assists.

The home team outscored Duquesne 44-17 in the second half. UCF forward Masseny Kaba posted 11 points on 5-8 shooting with nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Guard Ahna Burney also scored 16 points for UCF as she drained four triples on 10 attempts. Alisha Lewis led UCF with eight assists with just two turnovers in 27 minutes of action. The Knights were led in rebounds by forward Destiny Thomas who had 10 boards to go along with seven points and a steal.

Duquesne was led by Tess Myers who had 16 points and was the only Duke in double-digits in the season opener.

Coppin State 73, LaSalle 70

Jaia Alexander shot 9-9 from the free-throw line and 10-18 from the field to lead all players with 30 points as Coppin State travelled to Philadelphia to beat LaSalle by three points. Coppin State was down 55-53 with 8:15 to play as LaSalle's Kenya Cote-Lysius made a layup to put the Explorers ahead. With 7:51 to play Colleen Bucknor scored on a layup to tie it 55-55 and from there Coppin State never trailed again. Jaia Alexander's layup at 2:23 gave Coppin a 70-63 lead before LaSalle surged back for a 7-3 run to close the game in a losing effort.

Aliyah Lawson pitched in 21 points for Coppin State. Bucknor just missed a double-double with eight points and eight rebounds off of the bench. Jewel Watkins grabbed five rebounds with one block off of the bench in her first collegiate game.

Kayla Spruill had 17 rebounds and 16 points for LaSalle.

San Francisco 69, Morgan State 53

Ioanna Krimili continues to show that she is one of the most exciting players in the NCAA. She dropped 4-7 threes and shot 7-11 overall, scoring 20 points with seven rebounds and two assists for San Francisco. She got a lift from her teammate Jasmine Gayles, who poured in 19 points on 8-9 shooting. She went 2-2 from three-point land. Amalie Langer scored 16 points as San Francisco scored on 54 percent of their shot attempts in the home win.

Charlotte 63, Richmond 45

A strong third quarter led Charlotte to a season opening win over Richmond. Transfer KeKe McKinney had a solid debut for Charlotte with 12 points on 5-11 shooting. She also had five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Charlotte's high scoring talent Octavia Jett-Wilson struggled on 5-19 shooting but she still led the team with 16 points. She also led the team with eight points and a block. She also collected two steals. Mikayla Boykin led Charlotte with three steals, while scoring 10 points, with five rebounds and three assists.

Richmond's Addie Budnik was tough for the visiting squad with 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists.

Texas 131, New Orleans 36

After leading 77-11 at the half the Longhorns decided to let up a bit and allow New Orleans to score 23 points over the next two quarters as Texas nearly won by 100 points in the first game of the season.

New Orleans got 19 points from Brianna Ellis who shot 6-9. The rest of her team shot 6-40. Texas was led by Kyndall Hunter's 27 points who shot 10-13 and 7-8 from three. Rori Harmon dished out eight assists, three ahead of Aliyah Matharu's five assists who also scored 18 points. Texas had 30 assists and 12 turnovers. New Orleans had eight assists and 38 turnovers.
