Kent State's Katie Shumate scored 13 points on 6-9 shooting, leading her team to a 77-54 home win over Northern Kentucky, Sunday afternoon.

Shumate, a guard from Newark, Ohio and two-time Honorable Mention Mid-American Conference selection, is off to a hot start this season. In Kent's first two games she is shooting 58.3 percent from the field, while averaging 15.5 points per game. She's also averaging six boards per game as well.

Speaking of rebounds, Kent (1-1) outrebounded Northern Kentucky 40-32. Forward Bridget Dunn led the way with nine rebounds for the Golden Flashes. "You see it up there, you gotta go grab it with two hands, bring it down, just claim it as yours and don't let anyone else take it from you," Dunn said. The 6-3 forward from Carmel, Indiana, provided physical play while establishing a career high on the glass.

"It's been a real big focus for me," Dunn said. "[Assistant coach Mike] McKee has been drilling me to be more physical, crash the boards [and] play through my shot. Playing defense gets you open on the offensive end for the team. Rebounds are really important to winning games. That's something that I've been buying into with my position here."

Kent State built a 59-35 lead going into the fourth quarter and kept it's foot on the gas at the beggining of the period before coach Starkey cleared his bench and allowed each of his players to get some minutes. One of the most lively moments of the game came after Lexy Linton, who was the final player to enter the game, scored off of an offensive rebound before being fouled. She posted three points, with a rebound in just two minutes.

Northern Kentucky's Lindsey Duvall tallied a double-double in the loss. She had 13 rebounds and 12 points. Despite that Northern Kentucky struggled throughout the game to score making just 32.2 percent of its shots including 6-27 from three.

It's a good Northern Kentucky team," head coach Todd Starkey said. "That's not the way they typically play and I thought we had a lot to do with that. I think Northern Kentucky is going to win a lot of basketball games this year, so I was pleased to come out with a quality win against a tough opponent."

Cal State Fullerton 71, San Jose State 63

Fujika Nimmo posted 19 points to lead Cal State Fullerton to its first win of the season. The senior guard helped her team win by performing well in an area that is usually not her strength. A career 57.2 free-throw shooter, Nimmo shot 9-11 from the charity stripe, good for 81.8 percent. So far, the 5-8 standout from Davenport, Florida is averaging 22.5 points after two games. She is shooting 72.2 percent from the foul line so far.

Coppin State 78, Winthrop 49

After dropping its first two games, Coppin State travelled to Winthrop (0-3) and wiped the home team off of the floor after four quarters.

Sophomore guard Jewel Watkins had her best career performance, posting 24 points, eight rebounds and four assists. From Whitehall, Ohio, Watkins shot 9-15, including 6-9 from three. Coppin State shot 50 percent overall and 40.9 percent from three. Winthrop shot 37.5 percent from the floor and 20 percent from long range.
