A look at women's basketball talents

College basketball is in off-season mode but that doesn't mean we can't look back at the talent that made the 2021-22 season a success. Let's check out some of the women that you may or may not know but should on the hardcourt.

Desi-Rae Young - UNLV

One of the top centers in the NCAA, Desi-Rae Young has had a strong first two seasons of her career. The UNLV standout who competes in her hometown of Las Vegas averaged 12.7 points and 6.6 rebounds as a freshman in 2020-21. Those numbers improved to 15.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game last season. Her shooting percentage improved from 51.1 to 55.3 as well. Young had just one game under 10 points when she scored nine with 10 rebounds and five assists in a win over New Mexico. She posted 13 double-doubles including a 16-point, 15-rebound game against Utah State and a 15-point, 15-rebound outing against San Jose State. After leading her team to the Mountain West championship, Young had a good showing in a first-round loss of the NCAA Tournament against Arizona. She scored 16 points on 7-10 shooting to go along with 11 rebounds.

Chanin Scott - North Carolina A&T

Chanin Scott got the opportunity to become a leading lady at North Carolina A&T after being a role player in three seasons at Georgia Tech. During the 2020-21 and last season, she was one of the more productive players in college basketball. With eight double-doubles, Scott shined on numerous occasions. Her highest assist performance came when she recorded 10 dimes with 20 points in a win over Campbell. She scored a season high 25 points with 10 rebounds against Elon. In her final game Scott had a double-double with 22 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the Big South Tournament against UNC-Ashville. In 2021-22 she shot a career best 54 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from three and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line. In her final seven games Scott shot 60 percent from the field, making 45 of 75 attempts from the field. Scott averaged 14.6 points per game which is a career high. She also made things happen on defense with 2.2 steals.

Autumn Newby - LSU

Autumn Newby provided a strong presence on the boards for LSU. She hauled down a career best 8.1 rebounds per game and shot a high of 54 percent from the field. Newby, a 6-2 forward from Lawrenceville, Georgia posted 10 or more rebounds on 12 occasions last season. Her season high was 13 rebounds which she yanked away in a victory over Texas A&M. Newby averaged 6.2 points per game, scoring a season high 15 when she made six-of-eight field goal attempts against Arkansas. In a second-round game during the NCAA Tournament, Newby collected a season high four steals while grabbing 10 rebounds in that contest. Newby played her first three seasons of collegiate ball for SEC foe Vanderbilt. In 115 career games at the two institutions, Newby grabbed 790 rebounds.

Sydni Harvey - South Florida (Belmont Transfer)

A 5-10 point guard from Nashville, Tennessee, Sydni Harvey scored 1,142 points over 109 games at South Florida. She averaged 10.5 points and made 179 three-pointers over her career. South Florida toppled No. 9 Oregon early in the season and Harvey scored 22 points, draining four of 10 shots from three-point land and hitting eight of her 10 free-throw attempts. Harvey also posted 22 points in an early season win over Alabama State. She hit six three-pointers in that contest. Harvey dropped a career high 52 three-pointers, making 28 of those threes over the first nine games of the season. In her final game at South Florida, Harvey scored 11 points in an opening round NCAA Tournament loss to Miami. In 2022-23, Harvey will be competing at Belmont.
