In the distant reaches of the universe, on a planet eerily similar to our own, a remarkable dilemma has befallen its inhabitants. Their lives, their very cognition, hinge on a mysterious element known as Nuronium, found in their atmosphere. Unlike humans, these beings require Nuronium for their cognitive faculties. Without it, imagination and reflective thought slip away, and over time, even long-term memories fade into oblivion. While it's a fragile existence, Nuronium also offers a boundless source of clean energy, powering their civilization for millennia.

However, a crisis has arisen. The Nuronium source has been compromised, releasing a pollutant that threatens the fertility of their species. If they persist in relying on this resource, their extinction is virtually guaranteed within a century. Yet, a beacon of hope shines through; scientists have identified a passing comet, carrying an alternate energy source called Polixate. This substance does not affect fertility and can provide the same sustainable energy as Nuronium, albeit with a catch. The shift to Polixate comes at a great cost—it alters the very essence of their culture. Creativity wanes, long-term memories diminish, and their society begins to fade into obscurity. The Polixate comet will grace their orbit for only a few days, with centuries passing before its return. The clock is ticking, and the planet's administrative council awaits your tiebreaking vote.

Dr. Taylof's faction contends that they must continue to use Nuronium. They argue that their species' culture, encompassing centuries of literature, music, art, and scientific achievements, is what makes life worth living. To lose the memory of their people's history and the ability to innovate would render their future generations mindless drones. While basic needs for survival and reproduction might be met, Dr. Taylof believes that life without memories, imagination, and culture would be devoid of meaning. They argue that future generations, unable to contribute to the civilization they inherit, should accept their fate and embrace extinction with dignity.

On the opposing side, Dr. Kahan and their followers vehemently disagree. While they acknowledge that switching to Polixate would decrease the quality of life, they argue that preserving life is of paramount importance. Dr. Kahan's group believes that the continuation of life alone holds immeasurable value. They contend that every member of their species, in small but consistent ways, contributes to the betterment of their people. By ensuring the existence of their species, they argue that they are ultimately enhancing the collective happiness of their kind.

Yet, Dr. Taylof vehemently rejects the notion that maximizing happiness constitutes the ultimate goal of life. They believe that a meaningful life is not solely defined by happiness but also by the preservation of culture and traditions. The act of being a link in the chain of tradition and safeguarding cultural artifacts holds profound significance. Merely existing, akin to contented pets, is not enough to confer value upon life.

In the midst of this ethical and existential struggle, the advocates for Polixate argue that choosing extinction is fundamentally unethical. Dr. Kahan posits that there is no moral distinction between what they do and what they allow to happen when an alternative path is possible. To willingly make a decision leading to extinction equates to mass murder, they say.

This cosmic dilemma has left the council divided, and your vote is now the pivotal factor. The choice is stark and fraught with consequences: Nuronium for a while, preserving their culture and memories, or Polixate forever, ensuring their survival while surrendering their creative and cultural essence.

As they weigh the scales of existence against the erosion of culture, the inhabitants of this unique planet await the decision that will shape the destiny of their species. The question remains: What path shall they tread—the preservation of their memories and culture, or the pursuit of survival, with the price being the essence of who they are?
