Morgan Lewis wins 100H at Jesse Owens Classic

Morgan Lewis snuck out a close win in the 100-meter hurdles at the Jesse Owens Classic on April 23 in Columbus, Ohio.

Lewis and her Ohio State teammate Alexus Pyles finished at 13.23 and 13.24 respectively. The Buckeye duo flipped spots during the prelim round earlier in the afternoon. Pyles qualified for the final at 13.15, while Lewis finshied at 13.31 both times were winded aided at 3.8. In the final their times were wind aided at 2.5.

Both Buckeyes are now in the top five of the Big Ten rankings. Pyles 13.15 is second in the conference, while Lewis ranks fourth at 13.23. Penn State's Yasmin Brooks is number on at 13.04 and Destiny Huven of Wisconsin separates Pyles and Lewis at the number three spot with a time of 13.16.

Lewis, a senior, has had a successful collegiate career as a hurdler. She started at Fresno State where she won the 60-meter hurdles championship in the Mountain West Conference in 2018. She transferred to Ohio State the next season. In 2019 Lewis placed third in the 100-meter hurdles at the Big Ten Championships. She duplicated that success during the 2020 indoor season in the 60-meter hurdles final.

Lewis is looking to have a successful showing at this year's Big Ten outdoor meet following disappointment at the 2021 outdoor championships where she didn't finish the race during the 100-meter hurdles.

Alyssa Wilson Wins Hammer Throw at Baylor Meet

Texas State's Alyssa Wilson threw 73.20 meters to win the Michael Johnson Invitational hammer throw competition, April 22. Wilson is currently second in the NCAA. She trails only Camryn Rogers of California who is on top of the rankings with a mark of 75.73.

Wilson previously competed at UCLA from 2018-21, where she qualified for the NCAA championships at the NCAA outdoor finals of the shot put, discus throw and hammer throw in 2018 and 2019. Last season she qualified for the NCAA final in the discus throw and hammer throw in 2021.

In her first five meets at Texas State, Wilson won 12 consecutive open throwing competitions. At the Michael Johnson Invitational she won the hammer throw but placed second in the shot put and discus throw.

Hoosiers' Paola Fernandez-Sola Leaps into NCAA Top 10

Indiana's Paola Fernandez-Sola now has the seventh best long jump in the NCAA as she recorded a mark of 6.61 at the Indiana Invitational. Fernandez-Sola won the competition, besting a field of 29 jumpers. Louisville's Synclair Savage was second at 6.44.

Fernandez-Sola is number one in the Big Ten. She is looking to win her first conference championship. During the indoor season she placed fifth at the Big Ten meet. In 2021 she was 10th at the Big Ten outdoor championship meet and sixth at the indoor conference championships.

Coppin State's Latifa Ali Shines at Morgan State Meet

Latifa Ali recorded personal best times with a win in the 100 meters at 11.59 and a runner-up placing in the 200 meters at 23.55 at the Morgan State Legacy Track & Field Meet, April 23. Ali currently ranks second in both the 100 and 200 meters in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. During the indoor season Ali won the conference championship in the 200 meters, while taking silver medal finishes in the 60 meters and 1,600 meter relay.

In the 100 meters at the Morgan State Legacy Track & Field Meet, Ali edged out Jessika Gbai of Howard who ran a time of 11.61. In the 200 meters Gbai topped Ali with her winning time of 23.25. Ali's first 100 meters win of the outdoor season at the Aggie Invitational where she won with a time of 11.67.
