On Thursday July 23, the heavy smoke from Canada had long since cleared, and Somers 12u returned to the diamond versus the Yorktown Huskers.  At Primrose Field, the Tuskers wielded strong bats and effective pitching to a 4-1 lead. But unfortunately, the home team couldn’t close out the deal.

Yorktown tied the score in the fourth inning and went onto an easy 13-6 victory.

The Huskers score first too. After Samantha Thomas got the first two outs with a pop to Melina Olivera and a grounder to Isabella Villareale, Leah Bellor started a two out rally for the visitors. She smoked a single to left field, and Marissa Calvert stepped in to do her two times better. She went to deep center field for a stand up triple, and Yorktown was on the board.

One out still to go, Thomas went back to dealing. She got a grounder to third base, and Olivera made easy work of the chance.

Out of the circle and into the box, Thomas drew a walk and stole second base.  Unfortunately, she got thrown out stealing third and the failed swipe hurt a little more after Grace Magnotta reached second base on an infield over throw.

The Somers Tusker pitcher kept her head up nonetheless. After Villareale made a diving play for the first out of the inning, Thomas struck out the next two batters to retire the side.

Adison Rizzo on notice in the circle, the Yorktown starter was up to the task. She led with a pair of strikeouts and snared Bridgette Murphy’s comebacker to move the game to the third inning.

Thomas was unfazed, though. Two strikeouts and a ground ball to short put Rizzo right back on the spot.

She was unable to keep up this time. The Yorktown starter issued walks to Jazmin Marcano and Thomas, and a ground out back to the circle by Olivera moved both runners up. So in stepped Magnotta, and a ground ball to short exchanged an out at first base for two runs scored at the plate.

Up one now, Somers kept coming. Sadie Siena dropped a pop behind first base, Elizabeth Spallina reached base on an infield hit, and Hadley Stephens bounced a single up the middle. Another run in, and Villareale finished the four run inning by slapping a single to right field.

Unfortunately, the lead didn’t last very long. Olivera entered for the little Tuskers and had trouble locating the strike zone. She walked one batter, hit two others, and Yorktown got one run back on a wild pitch. She did get the next two Yorktown batters on strikes, and almost got out of the inning with limited damage.

Up went Juliana Dugan’s pop behind the plate, and Magnotta’s lunge just couldn’t make the squeeze on the ball. Instead another wild pitch was thrown by Olivera, and an infield hit tied the score at four

The Tuskers was unable to respond in the bottom of the fourth inning, and then the game really got away from the home team. Yorktown took advantage of more wildness and put up nine runs in the last two innings. Somers did answer with two more runs in the sixth inning, but the effort fell well short for the loss.
