On Tuesday April 14, Yorktown came across town and exchanged runs with their hosts. The Huskers scored five of six to open, and Somers almost returned the favor. Five of seven for the Tuskers, a fierce 7-6 game emerged. But unfortunately, the trend continued and not in favor of the Tuskers

Yorktown scored the next six goals and handed Somers a 15-9 loss.

The game began with something the Tuskers couldn’t solve. After Khloe Clarkin sent the draw upwards, the first of many loose balls was secured by Lily Diaz.

Moments later, Yorktown stepped into the passing lanes. From behind, Annie Cunneen waited, and on the cut, Juliet Horton received. In stride, the middie fired, and Yorktown led 1-0.

Only 28 seconds in, the game went back and forth for the next four minutes. Turnovers on both ends, an errant Somers pass on offensive put the Huskers on the attack at 7:52.

Up the field, Yorktown set up, and Sydney Sateriale decided she wasn’t waiting for help. She charged through the herd and drew a penalty. Sateriale then lined up and increased the lead to 2-0.

At 6:58, Diaz ran under another draw, but Yorktown ran into their own hard truth. On the penalty whistle, Sateriale readied, and Emma Donaldson made easy work with 6:10 left in the first.

Unfortunately, transition defense didn’t let the Somers offense take the cue, and once again, the scramble had the expected result. Diaz picked up, and soon enough, Cunneen scored on the penalty shot at 4:22.

Of course, Diaz struck again on the draw and then won her own scramble. She lost the ball on her rush on goal. But the middie got her own pickup and scored at 2:54.

Four in a row, Somers made a change in the middle. Sofia Conner entered and her draw win put Amelia Marcus on the curl. Swinging left, the 8th grader unleashed, and the Tuskers were on the board at 2:30.

Diaz didn’t go away, though. She won another ground ball, and Ava Ryan and Megan Durante took it from there. A perfect pick and roll, Durante received and Yorktown regained a four goal lead.

1:53 to go, Somers showed they could play basketball too. Starting with a Mia Paulmeno steal, the elephants ran the fast break, Ahead to Kate Barton, she passed to Bella Mancini on the left, and Julia Fitzsimons didn’t stand a chance.

In at :25, Somers was not content to run out the clock. Conner won the face off, drew the penalty and closed the quarter scoring at 5-3.

Onto the second, Donaldson was the first to shine. Sateriale swung all the way right into space, and the Tusker snared the projectile with her catcher.

Then after trading turnovers, Caitlyn Mayfield took matters into her own hands. Down low on the left, she ignored a sea of green jerseys and forced her shot into a 5-4 game at 9:51.

Not so fast, Diaz wasn’t having a tie. She secured the draw bounce, and after pressure out front created a scramble, Boucher perished for the goal.

Scoring at 9:18, Diaz did it again but so did Donaldson. After Conner won the draw, Diaz deflected her pass and seized the ball out of the air. Forcing a penalty on attack, Diaz dropped the ball on the way, and Donaldson got there first this time.

Moments later, Donaldson stopped Diaz again, and Mayfield took her turn. Dancing the defense on the left, the middie dumped inside to Conner, and she brought Somers within one at 5:29.

The draw to Conner, Mayfield passed long, and Yorktown kept their distance. Megan Durante weaved through the defense and found enough room to give Yorktown a 7-5 lead.

4:47 remaining in the half, Conner came away with the ball and that left Mayfield to mark her familiar territory. She danced and waited until Mia Paulmeno emerged alone. In front, the senior pulled the trigger, and the margin returned to one at 3:38.

In for the tie when Mayfield snared the draw, Conner was whistled for a charge, and the tide was ready to turn for good. Up field, Durante rode the wave and passed left to Sateriale for an easy goal at 2:43.

No surprise ahead, Diaz took the ball out of the air, and pressure led to a penalty on Paulmeno. A man advantage, Sateriale made a little sidearm pass inside to Ryan, where the defender stood her ground. She juked with her stick and snuck an underhand shot past Donaldson.

72 seconds to go in the half, the time was not short for Yorktown. The whistle gave the Huskers the ball, and Ryan’s rush on the right closed the half at 10-6.

90 seconds in, Durante extended the lead to five, but the advantage held for most of the period. That is until Diaz did her thing. She scooped a loose ball, and Sateriale made it 12-6 at 1:36.

A Somers turnover just about sealed the deal. Ryan took a long cross field pass, and all alone in front of Donaldson, the goalie had no chance with 1.5 seconds left in the third.

Mancini, Mayfield and Paulmeno brought the game within range at 13-9. But a big save on Mayfield at three minutes proved the last straw. Ryan making sure the other way at 2:41, the Tuskers could still hold their heads high.
