Somers Returns Favor in 7-3 Victory versus John Jay
On Thursday May 7, Somers hoped to get revenge after falling 5-4 at home two days earlier, but taking the field at John Jay, both teams heavily populated the base paths in the first inning. Bases loaded with one out for Somers and first and second with no one out for John Jay, the team putting in the larger dent would set the tone and take the day.
Somers scored five and John Jay only one in the Tuskers 7-3 victory.
The afternoon did seem to start pretty well for Jack Garneau, though. He struck out Gavin Kelly, and was ready to go. Not quite, he walked the next four batters, and Somers was on the board. Justin Thomas then added a double for two more, and Matt Giudice closed the five run inning with a single to center.
Even so, John Jay initially responded. Aidan Chernick reached on an error, and Jackson Moreo singled to center. Ryan McAuley then proved up to the early challenge. He got Ben Kalish on strikes, and Amogha Bhat grounded into a fielder’s choice at second. However a balk didn’t allow the Tusker to get out of the inning unscathed.
5-1, Somers kept coming nonetheless. Kelly singled to left, Tyler Venturini reached on an error at short, and a wild pitch got the run back for the Tuskers.
Onto the third, McAuley locked in. Two pop ups and fly ball gave the bats back to the offense in the top of the fourth.
No answer in the fourth, Somers' other starter gave his teammate a boost in the bottom. With second and third and two outs, Eli Tubbs’ single added a run to the John Jay tally, but Kelly threw the second runner out at the plate.
A one out triple by Justin Thomas had Somers slated to get the run back, though. Instead, Giudice and Radding weren’t able to push the run across.
No problem, Kelly was there for his pitcher again. Before the centerfielder’s acrobatics, the right side of the infield did their part. Henry Barbagallo went deep in the second base hole on David Storch’s grounder, and Lorenzo D’Ambrosio was there with the scoop at first.
A couple of errors at short did create a jam, and Bhat delivered to cut the lead in half. That is all, when Luke Fisch launched deep to center, Kelly ran the ball down for the final out.
McAuley took it from there. With the help of Tyler Venturini’s 7th inning insurance homer, the winning pitcher retired the last six in a row, and Somers answered back for Tuesday’s loss.
Somers Chills Westlake by a Score of 18-0
Last week, the Tuskers undefeated season finally came to an end at Yorktown. "It was a hard fought game," said Caitlin Fitts."They are a good team." But the conversation afterwards turned inward and reached a consensus. “We can't be so chill," Fitts clarified, and on Monday May 11, Westlake was on the receiving end of the rise in temperature.
The girls scored three in the first, four in the second and went on to an easy 18-0 win.
Of course, the game began the way it usually does. Julia Peanamanda led off with an infield hit, and Gianna Peanamanda followed with a bunt base hit.
An overthrow at first moved the runners up, and Katie Cole didn’t overreach in the three hole. Her ground ball to third brought in Julia, and soon enough, the family was back together. Fitts stroked a single up the middle, and Gianna joined her sister on the bench.
2-0, the Tuskers continued. Emily Boyle’s sacrifice fly moved up Fitts, and Keira Griggs’ single added one more.
Still, Westlake did open the bottom of the first with a lead off single, but Boyle did not blink. The starter got a strikeout looking, snagged a line drive back at her, and Cole made easy work of a grounder to short.
Somers made no apologies for getting a break to start the second either. Brooke Olivier, Mia DiChiaro and Alyssa Pirraglia all walked, and with no one out, Gianna Peanamanda and Cole were happy to get the bat off their shoulders. Two straight doubles and Somers led 7-0.
Boyle proved very comfortable with a lead too. After a lead off walk, the Tusker got a groundout to first, picked a grounder back to the circle and issued her second strike out.
Onto the top of the third, Boyle also mastered the box. She led off with a single, and another stampede began. Griggs walked, Kaleigh Conti went to right for an RBI single, and Olivier did the same with a long double.
Pirraglia made it 10-0 with a ground out to short, and all Westlake could do was hope for mercy. Another Boyle would help out the home team in that regard. “The first pitch I saw, I swung,” said Caitlin Boyle, and her double made it second and third.
Off the bench, Rachel Lantz wasn’t looking to work the count either. “I was really looking to hit,” said the junior third baseman, and the bloop single dropping behind third had DiChiaro putting on the bow.
She knocked in run number 12, and after delivering the last three outs bottom of the fifth, the final tally had Fitts looking forward. “I’m hoping for a bunch more wins,” she concluded.
