After coming back to defeat BYSNS on Friday night, John Jay didn’t wait long to fall behind on Sunday versus Pawling. The Wolves were down 2-0 in the opening minutes, and they obviously had plenty of time to come back. Unfortunately, the boys still weren’t on the board well into the third. So when Kenny Irving got called for a hook and then PJ DeNoia went out two minutes later, the night seemed done. But like Friday night, John Jay dug the disadvantage and this time Pawling got buried.

DeNoia got the shorthanded goal, Kyle Petschek tied the game, and in overtime, Kenny Irving literally put the icing on the cake. “It was his first varsity goal as a junior. It was his first game winning goal in overtime, and today’s his birthday. So he couldn’t have timed it any better,” said Coach Greg Janos.

Of course, Pawling was quickly on the clock too. “They got a good jump on us. They came out of the gate,” said Janos.

Jake Geiger had the good fortune of having the first goal come off his skate at 16:23, and the energy made good on Lavoie’s goal too. “The second one, nine out of ten times Dylan (Rogers) gobbles that one up,” said Janos.

The goalie agreed. “We didn’t come out so well. We let in two quick ones that we should not have let in,” said Rogers.

From there, though, Rogers did his part, and Lavoie was the first to get the message. Rogers turned away the forward’s shot out front at 10:05, and then after winning the race to the puck, the Tiger was stood down by Rogers again at 7:10.

The offense then took the cue, and forcing Joey Anderson into a hold had the Wolves circling. They kept the pressure on throughout the powerplay, and Thomas Mount definitely felt the onslaught. But the Pawling goalie refused to relent and took the 2-0 lead into the second.

The period break didn’t interrupt the intensity, though. Lavioe made a nifty behind the back push that deftly went through the crease, and off a cross ice pass, Anderson put a tough one on Rogers at the 11 minute mark.

Not sitting back, Logan Boera intercepted a pass in the John Jay end and made for the blue line. Unfortunately, an offsides stopped the Wolf in his tracks, and thirty seconds later, so did Mount when Liam Burke attempted to deflect DeNoia’s blast from the blue line.

Matching up in goal, Rogers headed off Gavin Dumas’ head of stream and refused to give ground on the breakaway. He had his hands full moments later when Lavoie’s hard work around the crease opened up a shot with under three minutes to go.

Another of his 50 saves, Rogers had no problem deferring to his counterpart on DeNoia’s last second rush on Mount. Same result and Pawling remained in front by two.

But no quit in John Jay, DeNoia was in the mix on three good opportunities to open the third. The forward's wrap around freed Kenny Irving for a shot, his work in deep got Owen Scinicariello an opportunity, and a rush down ice fed Burke for a wide slapper at 14:45.

Pawling kept playing too, and Rogers continued to keep his end up. Then Irving got flagged at 9:06 and the penalty just killed, James DeNoia’s cross check didn’t look so great either. But apparently John Jay had Pawling exactly where they wanted them.

Taking the feed from Petschek, PJ DeNoia put the puck on from Mount’s left, and the save kicked behind. Undeterred, DeNoia shot off Mount’s back, and the deflection got the boys on the board.

6:18 left, John Jay killed off the rest of the power play and Scinicariello had John Jay in business three minutes later. The freshman got the puck ahead to DeNoia who fed cross ice to Petchek, and he put the brakes on Mount. Waiting for an opening, Petschek made the read and tied the score.

3:25 remaining, the excitement almost went away in a flash. A cross ice pass kicked off a John Jay skate and had two Tigers rushing breakneck at Rogers with 50 seconds remaining. “That was pretty scary,” Rogers didn’t deny.

Playing hero, Scinicariello took away his goalie’s fright and raced down to cut off the play. Rogers wasn’t the only one to notice either. “I think he was double, triple and quadruple shifted at the end,” said Janos. “He was one of the key guys making those plays at the end that really saved us.”

Time now on John Jay’s side, Irving got in deep from the side and made the most of a glove side that didn’t look strong all game. “I made him make the first move and watched that top left shoulder open up,” Irving said.

Pretty sweet and just under the crossbar, no way 16 could look any better.
