Two games in the books this season and John Jay girls soccer was without a win. Along with a tie and a loss, the girls aimed to change that on Thursday September 17 at Contest Field. On visitation, Hastings was hoping not to be the first victim. Sorry, it didn’t take the visitors very long to have their aspirations dashed.

John Jay scored at 36:40 and 34:50 for a 2-0 score the lead held all the way to the end.

A game began that began with a little foreshadowing. In the opening sequence Maye Viders used her footwork to break down the sideline, and while the resulting shot by Alex Milich was an easy chance for the Hastings goalie, the alarm was clearly sounded.

Unfortunately for Hastings, the call went unheeded. Moments later, Viders reappeared on the same side and successfully marked her territory this time. “I had the girl down on the wing,” said the sophomore, “and a whole lot of space.”

To which Sophya Papa was acutely attuned. “I knew when Maye cut in, she was looking for a cross pass,” revealed the freshman.

The anticipation correct, Viders gave all credit to her teammate. “Sophya beat her defender and placed it well,” said the attacker.

On net and good for Papa’s first ever varsity goal, the middie played down the milestone. “It was just great being able to celebrate with my team,” she assured.

On the other hand, she left bragging rights for home later that night. No goals for her older sister, the younger considered home much Mykel might be jealous of her night. “Very,” she said.

Joking of course, the goal producing duo switched places less than two minutes later. After the corner kick came on the other side and rebounded back away from the goal, Papa gave chase and returned the favor.  “Maye was open behind me,” said Papa.

No doubt, Viders made good on the piece of prime real estate. Her hook eluded the goalie and hitting the inside of the post kicked in the right direction for a 2-0 lead.

From there, Hastings rarely saw the other side of the field, and the dominance had Viders expressing what was missing in the first two games. “In our last game, the defense did well, and in game one our offense performed. So we went to our film and conjoined the two,” concluded Viders. “Tonight, we did well on both sides of the field.”

Previously John Jay defeated Yorktown by a score of 5-0. Maye Viders scored the hat trick in the victory. The girls also got a shut out versus Fox Lane. Eight goals this time, the Wolves then took the momentum to Somers. A back and forth game, John Jay took the day by a score of 2-1. First at 21 minutes, Viders' pass into Abby Mattiello resulted in a penalty shot. Five yards away, the goalie guessed wrong and the Wolves led 1-0. So Somers answered back. Amelia Marcus had her shot deflect off one of the interior defensive heads. The ball changed direction, and Evelyn Hermanto was unable to adjust. Not to worry, Sophya Papa long assist at Mattiello score the game winner.

On the year, Maye Viders has 7 goals, 4 assists, Abby Mattiello has tallied five goals and Sophya Papa has four.
