On Tuesday May 26, John Jay jumped out to an 8-1 lead versus Tappan Zee and looked on their way to an easy afternoon. Then the Dutchman scored three straight, and needing a spark, Fin Degl knew exactly which Wolf could turn the ignition.
“Maye is just so gritty - especially when the other team has momentum,” said the junior, and Viders responded by leading the fast break to end the run, scored to open the third and ran under a draw that led to a goal by Coco Inglis.
The easy day back on track, the Wolves did take some time to gear up. Of course, the shift began with Viders racing the ball the length of the field, and Amelia Inglis took it from there. She passed right to Dillon Hill, and after the penalty was drawn, the attacker scored for a 1-0 lead.
At 6:42, Viders corralled the draw and had no interest in pulling even. On the penalty shot, she made the most of her goal line angle. The freshman waited on the whistle and hit Coco Inglis streaking forward for a 2-0 lead at 5:03.
Tappan Zee did respond by winning the draw, so the defense went to work. Riley McCaffrey handled a one hopper at 4:44 and Marcela Maurice scooped a loose ball to put Viders on her horse again.
The defender then raced to the goal line and her team worked the four corners. The ball got to Coco Inglis and her pass to the right gave Hill a lane to turn on the thrusters. The middie took off and put the ball past Allison Waitkus to extend the lead to three.
In at 1:28, time was not short. Kaitlyn Condon pushed the ball ahead to Degl on the draw, she dished left to Coco Inglis, and after the attacker cut right across the crease, she easily beat Waitkus.
Only ten seconds elapsing, Tappan Zee made quick work too. The Dutchman scored with 15.9 remaining, so Condon and Degl forced the Dutchman to double take. Condon’s push went to Degl in almost the same spot, and the middie scored on the penalty with zeroes on the clock.
Onto the second, Viders stayed on top. The freshman ran down the loose ball and she left it to the Brennan family. Back and forth in the end zone, Cait Brennan identified a cutting Coco Inglis, and the lead was 6-1 at 11:35.
Still, Waitkus was no pushover. Closeup, the Tappan Zee goalie stopped Viders and Coco Inglis, but Viders had the last laugh twice. She went around a pick for a 7-1 lead at 7:52, and 27 seconds later, Viders passed ahead to Erin Brennan on the goal line. The freshman cut to the goal and beat Waitkus high.
But Emily Butler refused to go dutch.. Two goals and an assist cut the lead in half, and timeout let the girls express their ire. Getting angry, said VIders, “we came out fired up.”
Viders played her part and Amelia Inglis and Hill extended to 13-4. The running clock wouldn’t come until the fourth, though. “This has always been my dream to play with the older girls,” said Clara Bazaar after giving John Jay a 17-7 lead.
The freshman added another on Erin Brennan’s assist and relished the trust her teammates have put in her. “It’s just an amazing feeling,” she assured.
Of course, the rookie isn’t ready to call it a day. “I feel like we’re going to make it,” Bazaar concluded.
