After helping to lead John Jay volleyball to a sectional championship in 2025, Jaime Bartley-Cohen took her show on the road to Bates College in Maine. Division 3 volleyball, Bartley-Cohen came in hoping to crack the starting lineup, and 100 kills on her stat line made more than a good case.
“My first start at Hamilton was a really big moment, because I have proven to myself and my coaches that I deserved to start and play,” said the sophomore, and her contribution helped to lead Bates to their first appearance in the postseason for quite a while.
Of course, the former Wolf didn’t just choose the school for the bump, set and spike of it all. “I really liked the academics. It’s very intense,” she revealed.
Her major in politics, she likes the applicable workload. “The topics that we learned about were very relevant to me and my life," Bartley-Cohen said of the engaging curriculum.
The same could be said for at least one of her professors, who worked at the CIA. “Her work was really inspiring and she has done a lot in her life,” said Bartley-Cohen. “So she’s definitely one of those professors who I’m going to for advice for future experiences beyond college.”
On the court, the sentiment was just as stimulating. “It’s a very different than being in high school,” she said. “The team is very talented, and there’s just a higher level of play.”
So her abilities elevated in kind, but improvement wasn’t just through osmosis. With a very driven team, said the hitter, “Our coaches were always trying to help us improve individually and as a team.”
Still, every athlete is confronted with low points, and on this team, support runs from one end of the bench to the other. Becoming sisters, said Bartley-Cohen, “having people like that to rely on was the best way to get through.”
A bond that doesn’t just exist in between or around the lines. “Our coaches are very lenient and want us to balance our work and volleyball life with our social life,” said the Bobcat.
So the college has sports houses where there are mixers among the competitors, and this group has no problem once getting in the front door. “Our team is very social,” said Bartley-Cohen.
The same goes for the John Jay grad and she knows how to go it alone too. “I love the dining hall. The food is really good. So every time you go there, you see a bunch of people you know, and you can socialize,” she assured.
Of course, the big hitter is there to get down to business too. The scholar wants to get more involved in her major, build stronger relationships with her professors and engage more vigorously in classes that point to her ultimate goal. “I’ve always been interested in becoming a lawyer,” she revealed.
A few years away, her volleyball goals are currently on deck. “I want to be a more efficient player. I want to be a more dominant player and still compete with the competitive drive and energy I’ve always given,” Bartley-Cohen concluded.
