CSK has announced it's retentions for IPL 2022!

The deadline to submit retained players list for the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League is now just 6 days away. Most of the IPL franchises have finalized their lists but are yet to announce the same in open. The IPL Governing Council & BCCI has asked the franchises to submit the retained players list by 12 PM – 30th November. InsideSport spoke to some of the franchise officials to check about the players they have decided to retain for IPL 2022.

After four seasons of enthralling cricketing action, the IPL gets ready for another shake-up, with a mega-auction set to take place ahead of the 2022 edition. There will be two new teams, and that would mean more slots for players and more exciting talent on show. However, all eyes will be on the player retention decisions of the franchises ahead of the all-in auction.

Teams like the Mumbai Indians and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) that have built a stable and solid squad will have a tough choice of retaining only 2-3 players from multiple match-winners.

All eyes will especially be on CSK, considering they are the defending champions heading into the new season. They've won two titles over the past four years and narrowly missed out on a third after a defeat to MI in the 2019 final.

Nevertheless, CSK's stable and balanced side have fared well overall despite an unexpected slump in IPL 2020. With a wide array of worthy players to choose from, it won't be easy for the management to decide who to retain.

Less than two weeks are left for announcing the players who will be kept in every franchise. MS Dhoni is a major player CSK is considering to retain. By November 30 the team must disclose their retention list and this team must continue giving a spectacular performance in the next season as well.

The retention policy :

4 players could be retained in each team

3 players at maximum could be retained.

A franchise can choose two foreigners.

There are four slabs in retention.

The highest value is of Rs. 16 crore, followed by Rs 12 crore, Rs 8 crore and 6 crore.

4 players CSK to retain for the upcoming IPL season :

4. Faf Du Plessis (Slab 3 : 8 Crores)

He’s the overseas player the franchise is likely to retain. The South African player will get 8 crores. He was the 2nd in the list of highest run-scorers in 2021. He made 633 runs in 16 matches in IPL 2021.

Faf du Plessis has scored 546 runs in the IPL 2021 in 14 matches at an average of 45.50 and with a healthy strike rate of 137.53. Gambhir also said that Faf's good form in the Caribbean Premier League has helped him excel in the IPL 2021. "He was in good form even in the CPL.

The in-form Faf du Plessis hit a magnificent 86 off 59 balls, laced with seven fours and three sixes, to help CSK post 192 for 3 after they were invited to bat in the final of IPL 2021.

Chasing an imposing target of 193, KKR could manage 165 for 9 in their 20 overs with Shubman Gill and Venkatesh Iyer hitting 51 and 50 respectively.

From 91 for no loss in the 11th over, KKR slumped to 125 for 8 in the 17th over in a dramatic batting collapse to lose the final.

3. Ravindra Jadeja (Slab 2 : 12 crores)

The team is going to retain Ravindra Jadeja, who is an all-rounder. He’s also a very vital player in CSK’s team. His contribution as a batter, bowler and fielder makes him a valuable player. Most likely he is to be retained for Rs 12 crore. In 2021 his paycheck was 7 crore from the franchise. Retaining Ravindra Jadeja should be the easiest of decisions to make for CSK. He's easily the most valuable player in this CSK squad and is another reason for their success in IPL 2021.

Jadeja bowled tight lines and choked the run flow with the ball, finishing with 13 wickets at an excellent economy rate of 7.06. He also excelled as a finisher with the bat, scoring 227 runs at an average of 75.66, and could easily have scored more runs had he batted up the order.

Jadeja is also arguably the best fielder in world cricket right now, and all that adds up to a player that every side would want. He took 13 catches at IPL 2021, including two stunners in the final against KKR.

2. Ruturaj Gaikwad (Slab 4 : 6 crores)

While there was some explaining to do for the previous three picks, this one is pretty simple. A young and upcoming batter who won both the Orange Cap and the Emerging Player awards and has received the praise of the entire cricketing world is someone you'd want to retain.

Ruturaj Gaikwad's opening partnership with Faf Du Plessis was the backbone of CSK's strong showing in IPL 2021. The maturity and composure he showed at the crease was remarkable.

Ruturaj Gaikwad bagged the orange cup and made 635 runs in 16 matches for CSK in the year 2021. He has the potential to be the future captain of CSK. The opener is going to get an amount of 6 crores.

While Gaikwad endured a tough start to the season, he repaid the management's faith by putting out excellent performances in the UAE leg. He finished with a whopping 635 runs in 16 matches, averaging 45.35 at a solid strike rate of 136.26.

1. Ms Dhoni (Slab 1 : 16 crores)

CSK retaining Dhoni doesn’t come as a surprise, especially with the brand value he brings to the team. At a recent CSK event, Dhoni had confirmed that his last T20 game will be in Chennai, putting his IPL retirement speculations to bed.

“I have always planned my cricket. My last ODI in India was in Ranchi. Hopefully, my last T20 will be in Chennai. Whether it’s next year or in five years’ time, I don’t know,” Dhoni had said.

It will be the first time CSK has decided not to retain Suresh Raina. The former India batsman has been out of touch and didn’t play crucial knockout IPL games.

Dhoni’s value to the team and the yellow army is a lot. He is likely to be retained in the team’s highest category retention of 16 crores. Under his captaincy, CSK has won the IPL trophy four times.
