Training for any sport is a difficult process that requires years of practice to perfect. When it comes to basketball, there are quite a few components that you should master to be at the top of your game. Whether you are the competitive type that wishes to outwork your opponents and focus on your skills, or you are interested in what it takes to be a successful hooper, you are in the right place. Here are a few tips on how to train to be a solid basketball player.
Take Care of Your Body
Basketball, or any sport for that matter, can take a toll on your muscles and joints. If you are looking to take on an intense training period during your off-season, be prepared to be taking helpful supplements, getting enough sleep, eating right, and drinking enough water. This way, your body can recover as quickly as possible. A great way to take care of your body is by choosing a protein powder that suits your needs. Depending on what type you go with and what amino acids are present will determine if you take protein before or after workout sessions.
An essential fitness skill needed to be a great basketball player is cardio, especially on the defensive end. Basketball is a very high-paced game and requires endurance to stay competitive. You are almost always moving, sprinting for a breakaway layup, jumping for a rebound, or getting in position for your team's full-court press. Players who struggle with cardio may have a tough time playing their part on the five-person squad, but the players that are in tip-top shape can make hustle plays and set the tone for a victory.
Pick Your Poison
It is always a good idea to have a stronghold on every aspect of the game, but you also want to hone in on one skill you particularly enjoy. Kobe Bryant was an incredible player, known for his signature fade away. If shooting the ball at a high percentage comes naturally to you, imagine how impressive your aim would be if you trained a few hours a day on shooting drills. As mentioned above, your poison is going to be much more powerful if you are an all-around player. This way, the other team will have to respect every aspect of your game, and you will always have them on their toes.
Train Your Mind
A huge part of being a successful athlete is how you train your body, but often, people forget the importance of training your mind. This may mean taking the time to watch game film to improve on your weaknesses and study the competition to put you one step ahead. Having your mind right also comes into play during tough workouts and during times when it seems like nothing will go right for you. Sports can be very grueling if you play at a high level, and they can take a lot out of athletes. Having a tough mentality is always helpful when you have an off game.
Believe it or not, a player can still make a significant impact on a game even if he/she doesn't score any points. An often overlooked aspect of basketball is impacting through energy, even if things aren't going your way. When the day comes (and it will) when it seems there is a lid on the rim, look for other ways to help your team. Focus on your defense and getting the ball to your teammates that are knocking shots. All of these efforts come from training your mind to put the team first, and eventually, your body will catch back up with your energy. Getting your mind right can be the trickiest part of all. Once you add in a bullet-proof mental state with hard work and dedication in the gym, you will be well on your way to becoming the best basketball player you can be.
