The 10,000 Hour Rule

The general concept behind the 10,000-hour rule, is simply a matter of practicing a specific task for 10,000 hours before mastery will be achieved.

Of course, everything in life is not simply black and white. The argument behind this concept is simply quality over quantity.

Would you consider 100 hours of studying without any guidance the same as studying 100 hours with a professional coach or mentor guiding your lessons?

Of course not.

The concept of 10,000 hours is more about the quality of commitment than the actual amount of time invested. That being said, nothing in life worthwhile is achieved without serious effort. Therefore, real effort needs to be a part of your journey to achieve the level in which you are striving for.

We are living in a very interesting time. Technology is obviously at the highest it’s ever been, which in turn provides information the moment you require it; if you put in the effort to retrieve it.

The problem is, this “instant” life, does not translate to achieving the next level of life. In the context of this article, the next level being mastering your craft.

Simply put, the false sense of success that is being portrayed in the media is giving a false sense of reality to those searching for the next level.

You know exactly what we’re talking about - the 10-year “overnight” success stories being portrayed online.

What you don’t see is what it takes/took to achieve mastery; true mastery of your craft.

This is one of the main driving forces behind a decision we made for The Street Trading. The reason we do not have an alert service at TST is simply because it creates a false since of success. Followers don’t succeed long term.

Besides that, it attracts the lazy person that doesn’t want to actually put in the time to learn. We have no time for those looking for the easy way out.

Success takes time and hard work. The harder you work, the less time it will take to achieve your goals. It’s truly is that “simple”.

To put things into perspective, a doctor in the U.S. will complete a 4-year undergraduate degree program, spend 4-years in medical school, and then complete 3-7 years of residency training before they are eligible for medical licensing. The average U.S. primary care physician earns $223,000 annually.

A lawyer will usually take 7-years of full-time studying after high school; 4-years of undergraduate study, followed by 3-years of law school. The average U.S. lawyer earns $120,000 annually.

Now, both annual salaries are not bad at all, however in terms of what you can earn as a consistently profitable trader; it’s low. That being said, what is crucial to take note of, is the amount of time and commitment it takes to achieve a level of mastery in a particular craft.

Professional athletes have been perfecting their craft since they were young kids; of course, their salaries can vary greatly, but the overall commitment to achieve elite status in their craft remains the same.

There are no short cuts to succeeding as a trader. That said, only you can define what success means to you.

Success can be measured from the PnL on your platform screen to the amount of freedom a consistently profitable trader ultimately has. That said, you have to remember, no one can or should be able to define what success means to you – that is entirely up to YOU and you alone.

You get out what you put in, but you must trust the process and remain focused on the overall goal.

Block out the b.s. noise and go achieve whatever you define as success; no matter how long it takes.

10,000 hours or 1,000 hours; it’s all about quality over quantity.
