Why Shouldn't You Punch a Nazi?
You would do it if they were Brown.
Hey there, progressives,
and conservatives,
and everyone in between the political spectrum!
You may be shocked by the title of this piece (or misread it in the first try) but...Yeah, that's the point. Would you be surprised if I told you that not all liberals think the same way? Some liberals are actually the exact opposite of snowflakes (which might be a hard concept for a right winger to understand). As a matter of fact, there are some progressives who are actually just as aggressive (as conservatives) about their views and are not afraid to defend those views with ferocity.
Yes, we exist.
With that said.
The most popular opinion among liberals/progressives is that we should not punch a nazi but show them love and kindness (and all that good stuff they do not deserve). I get it; it's because White terrorists in America are Americans and are protected by the Constitution (also because of White privilege, White supremacy, double standards, etc.). But, why though? I know a lot of liberals will quote Michelle Obama (whom I love so much) to me: "When they go low, we go high!" That sounds really great, until you realize that while they were down low, they (the right wing) were winning elections by gerrymandering, voter suppression, falsehoods, discrimination, fear mongering, use of racist / sexist / homophobic / transphobic / religious rhetoric and unapologetic hypocrisy. On the other hand, the left wing, the progressives, and the honestly sane bunch in the country, are left with multiple election losses and whimpering cowards called establishment Democrats. The left wing is also left with backbone-less progressives who back down from a fight when a right winger politically approaches them too strongly.
Well, luckily for all of us, there are progressives who do not back down from a political spar. Who do not cower away when right wingers approach them with lies, hatred, and sheer hypocrisy. There are progressives who refuse to bend over backwards or compromise their beliefs (in women's equality, atheism, LGBTQ rights, free speech, etc.). There are progressives who, when they (the right) go low, progressives go down low with them. And that's OK, because sometimes you need to be a crazy asshole, too. So, if a right wing White supremacist believes that a life is worthless because it is Black and proceeds to threaten it, why can't the Black person refuse to be threatened? If a neo-nazi thinks it OK to punch someone because they are a Jew, why can't the Jew throw a punch back? Why do most Americans always use baby gloves when handling White terrorists and terrorism?
The thing that is truly aggravating when talking about White supremacists, the alt-right, and neo-nazis is the delicate handling given to them when addressing their terrorism. We do not recognize White terrorists as, well..."terrorists." We do not recognize that majority of domestic terrorism in America is by Whites. We treat this group of terrorists (White supremacists, the alt-right, etc.) with so much gentleness and care, unlike the way we treat their Brown counterparts. If the people who matched in Charlottesville with tiki torches, screaming, "Jews will not replace us," were Brown or of color, the whole country would descend on them like fire from Hell's gates. But simply because these terrorists were White, the country (including the president) were so quick to search for an explanation firstly, before concluding that their behavior was indeed terrorism.
Till today, there are no (popular/existing) articles from big media names asking questions like, "Should we really bomb ISIS?", "Is ISIS bombing OK?", "Why you shouldn't bomb ISIS," or "The Perils of 'Radical Islam'-Bombing." But we see a lot of these same questions when the terrorists are deficient of melanin ("Is it OK to punch a nazi?", "Why you shouldn't punch a nazi?", or, "The Perils of Nazi Punching"). Brown people, who don't even have to be Muslim and are not (in no way, shape or form) affiliated with ISIS (or any terrorist group), are constantly discriminated against, prejudiced, and sometimes attacked (verbally and physically).
So why is it that an actual nazi, who is wearing a Confederate flag on his hat or nazi flag on his shirt (purposefully worn to intimidate) should not receive the same discrimination, prejudice, and attack (like law-abiding Brown Americans do)? The majority of the country (especially the right wing) will give a Brown terrorist a motive (before they know the actual motive) and call them a "terrorist" in the blink of an eye. Why do we hesitate to call a White terrorist a terrorist? Why can't we treat the neo-nazis / White supremacists / the alt-right the same way we treat Brown terrorists? White terrorists should get the same treatment that Brown terrorists (and, frankly, people of color) get.
