We are still in the thick of trouble, search, hoping, for a bright silver-lining, and most importantly a glimpse of hope

A Quiet Downtown Norfolk during Covid-19

August 1929, some 91 years ago to the date; one of the darkest moments, not just in the history of these states united, but this was one of darkest global moments the world has ever seen, and hopes to never see again.

The Great Depression happened after a major fall in stock prices becoming worldwide news with the stock market crash of October 29, 1929, (known as Black Tuesday). Between 1929-1932, worldwide gross domestic product (GDP) fell by an estimated 15%; Only since to be compared to the 2008 to 2009 Great Recession. The Great Depression had devastating effects in both rich and poor countries. Personal income, tax revenue, profits and prices dropped, while international trade fell by more than 50%. Unemployment in the U.S. rose to 23% and in some countries rose as high as 33%. Cities around the world were hit hard, especially those dependent on heavy industry. Construction was virtually halted in many countries. Farming communities and rural areas suffered as crop prices fell by about 60%.

Facing plummeting demand with few alternative sources of jobs, areas dependent on primary sector industries such as mining and logging suffered the most. I mentioned this is one of the darkest moment, never seen before, and hoped to never see again; but the reality is we are slowly slipping into another recession as we speak. As of now the unemployment rate sits at 10.3% with some 30 million persons still struggling to find work. Then we have those who have work, but are doing jobs that don’t pay well; forcing them to work double jobs just to keep the lights on.

  • We are struggling, while our congressional representatives fight over what politically makes them look good.
  • We are struggling, while our congressional representatives see how they can capitalize on the moment.
  • We are struggling, while our Washington representatives highjack the moment in hopes of saving themselves in an election.

We are struggling while some of our representatives sit comfortably, taking their time to give us relief. The Great Depression which saw horrors, loss of hope, and ultimately loss of life. Herbert Hoover, then President of these states united, from the Republican side of life may I add, declared,

"Nobody is actually starving. The hoboes are better fed than they have ever been."

But in New York City in 1931, there were 20 known cases of starvation; in 1934, there were 110 deaths caused by hunger. Based on statistics reported by Galbraith in The Great Crash 1929, the suicide rate in the United States increased from 17.0 per 100,000 people in 1929 to 21.3 in 1932 during the worst of the financial calamity.

It’s fascinating the see how even then the least of us were not important. Even then those who weren’t apart of the high elites, were just treated as cast aways. It helps me the deal with what we face today, realizing also as there is life on this here planet earth, their will always be those who could careless about it.

You ask how can you deal? With that? Its simple. You don’t expect things from folks, you don’t look to them to give you the answer, nor do you look to them, to give you hope. It forces someone like me, to look elsewhere. It causes me to realize, if I can’t depend on people, yet I am still surviving, and more excitingly I am still thriving. All I gotta do is find that source. This is what I believe the world is looking for. This is what I believe deep down inside, way back there in the allergic induced section of the onion 🧅 people are wondering how can this be? How I am making it?

  • Where do I get my strength?
  • Where do I get the will to keep going?

It is simple.. Your desire, your will, your determination to move beyond is buried, deep down inside.
