I. The Funeral of the Frictionless Myth

Let us begin with a moment of silence for the “Cloud.”

For the better part of two decades, the high priests of Silicon Valley sold the global public a beautifully sanitized, ethereal lie. They told us that the future was weightless. It was a clean, digital paradise of code floating in an invisible sky, a borderless web of pure light where data drifted like pollen, effortlessly democratizing information and binding humanity in a tight, harmonious embrace. It was the ultimate, shiny evolution of the post-WWII Neoliberal Economic Global World Order—a world where physical borders were supposed to melt away under the sheer, unstoppable efficiency of global capital, free trade, and fiber-optic cables.

It was a magnificent illusion. But if you strip away the sleek aluminum casing of your smartphone and look past the smooth, predictive interface of the latest generative AI model, you find something deeply primitive, violent, and heavy.

The Cloud isn’t weightless. It is an industrial monster of concrete, copper, and cooling fans. It is a ravenous, physical beast that possesses an insatiable appetite for the planet’s most finite resources. To fuel the current Artificial Intelligence boom—to train the massive frontier models that optimize our corporate balance sheets and automate our cognitive labor—the tech monopolies do not need abstract “good vibes.” They need millions of tons of copper, lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements. They need unprecedented, terrifying rivers of freshwater to cool their screaming server farms, and they need sheer, unadulterated, fossil-fueled electrical grids to keep the lights on in the data centers. If we ever got serious about renewable and nuclear energies, by removing the political interjections; these could satisfy the beast.

And here lies the central, agonizing paradox of our modern epoch: The post-WWII global democracy, built specifically to facilitate a smooth, rules-based, interconnected market, has successfully engineered the very technological monster that is now tearing it to pieces.

We are witnessing the grand smash-up between the AI Boom and the Neoliberal World Order. Guess which one is getting shit-canned? Hint: It’s the one that requires us to care about human rights, national sovereignty, and international law. And why? We'll get to that as we continue on, so stay with me for a brief history lesson first.

II. The Ghost of 1933: FDR’s Social Glue

To understand how thoroughly the script has been inverted, we have to jump back in the timeline to a moment when a U.S. President used the raw power of the state to glue a shattering world back together.

In 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt inherited a nation that was structurally decomposing. The Great Depression hadn’t just broken the banks; it had broken the social contract. The economic gears had ground to a catastrophic halt, and the smoke of systemic collapse was rising across the industrialized world.

FDR didn’t gently ask the free market to fix itself; he reached into the constitutional toolkit and grabbed the big levers. Invoking executive emergency powers—including the Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917 to manage the banking crisis, and later a battery of sweeping economic mandates—FDR fundamentally rewrote the relationship between the United States government, private corporate power, and the citizenry.

This was the birth of a massive structural adhesive. FDR used emergency authority to build a domestic safety net, regulate corporate predation, and direct industrial production toward a singular, collective goal. When WWII erupted, that same centralized state machinery was dialed up to eleven, transforming the American economy into the “Arsenal of Democracy.”

The ultimate irony? The horrific, cataclysmic violence of World War II was the exact kinetic engine that pulled the United States completely out of the Great Depression. The war forced a total mobilization of resources, built an unassailable industrial infrastructure, and left the U.S. standing as the lone, intact superpower in a global sea of rubble.

With that victory in 1945, the U.S. didn’t just walk away. It used its immense hegemony to build a brand-new, rules-based global architecture. At Bretton Woods, via the United Nations, the IMF, the World Bank, and eventually the World Trade Organization, the U.S. engineered the Neoliberal Economic Global World Order.

The core philosophy was simple: Make the world frictionless. By pushing for open borders, free trade, international law, and global labor arbitrage, the system sought to ensure that capital could move anywhere, resources could be traded peacefully, and minor nations could enjoy a veneer of sovereignty and self-governance. For seventy-five years, this framework exported the language of civil rights, environmental regulations, and labor standards. It wasn’t perfect—it was often a polite velvet glove hiding a corporate iron fist—but it required the global elite to maintain the illusion of cooperation, mutual benefit, and international consensus.

It was an era of gluing things together. And it lasted exactly until the algorithms got hungry.

III. The Modern Inversion: Ungluing the Globe for Compute

Fast forward to the present day. We are once again seeing a U.S. Executive branch reach into the legal toolkit for those same sweeping, FDR-style emergency war powers. But this time, the machinery isn’t being deployed to build a social safety net, defend global democracy, or protect the vulnerable.

Instead, the modern state is using emergency powers—invoking national security directives, export controls, and industrial defense acts—to act as the heavily armed enforcement arm for a handful of mega-corporate technocrats. The goal is no longer to glue the world together; it is to systematically unglue it.

Why? Because the frontier AI race has collided head-on with the limits of the physical earth, and the old neoliberal playbook is suddenly viewed by the ruling class as an intolerable, expensive drag on progress.

Under the old post-WWII model, if a Western tech giant wanted to extract lithium or copper from a developing nation, it had to navigate an incredibly annoying obstacle course of “friction.” It had to deal with local labor unions demanding fair wages. It had to deal with civil rights uprisings, indigenous land protections, environmental impact lawsuits, and international regulatory bodies auditing its supply chains. In a hyper-competitive, existential race for computational supremacy against foreign adversaries, these human and legal rights are no longer viewed as the triumphs of global democracy—they are viewed as bugs in the system that need to be patched out.

Enter the new paradigm: Techno-Nationalism and the return of Big Government as a corporate shield.

By declaring the AI race a critical national security emergency, the executive branch can effectively bypass the civil, environmental, and international friction that the post-WWII world spent decades creating. Emergency declarations are now used to fast-track domestic mining, override local environmental protections, subsidize mega-cap data centers with billions in taxpayer money, and ring-fence technological infrastructure behind domestic walls.

FDR used emergency powers to force corporations to serve the survival of the democratic state. The modern state is using emergency powers to force the remnants of democracy to serve the survival of the technocratic corporations.   In short, FDR used his emergency powers to help the People, Trump is now using those powers to serve the people up to the Corporations.

IV. Shaking the Global Tree: The Great Extraction Matrix

If you want to see what this look looks like on the international stage, look no further than the bizarre, transactional theater of American billionaires and political leaders making pilgrimages to authoritarian regimes, or cutting bilateral deals with traditional adversaries like China.

Think about the sheer, unadulterated pragmatism of it. Why would the vanguard of American technological prosperity cozy up to hyper-centralized, autocratic governance structures? Because China, and states like it, possess two things that a fracturing neoliberal democracy cannot easily provide: unrivaled real estate for heavy resource extraction, and a governance model that doesn’t give a damn about NIMBYism, labor strikes, or human rights.

An authoritarian government doesn’t have to worry about an upcoming election cycle or an environmental protest when it decides to dam a river for hydroelectric data center power or clear an entire region for rare earth mining. It operates by absolute decree.

The emerging global trade-off is breathtakingly cynical: We will let you farm our domestic agricultural lands or access specific market sectors, if you let the global tech stack farm AI infrastructure in your backyard without the friction of civil resistance. This is the beginning of the Great Shake-Up. By dismantling the post-WWII international frameworks—by ignoring the UN, tearing up multilateral trade agreements, and adopting a hostile, transactional “might-makes-right” foreign policy—the world power blocks are intentionally destabilizing the global tree to see what weak nations fall out.

In this new, unglued reality, the romantic notion of small-nation sovereignty and self-governance is dead. The globe is being divided into a brutal, binary matrix:

The Sovereign Tier The Extraction Tier

The Nuclear Technocracies The Resource Basins

And it pays to have as many of these under your national hat as possible. Nations like the United States, Russia, and China have all four of these under their command, making them the "Big Three." they are the empires that own the sovereign AI data centers, the energy infrastructures, and the ultimate kinetic equalizer (nuclear arsenals). Smaller, weaker nations myst navigate relationships with the "Big Three" and having nuclear weapons makes this a lot easier. Otherwise the smaller non-nuclear nations sole purpose is to have their geography and geology strip-mined for raw tech assets.

The geopolitical attitude toward these weaker nations has completely shed its diplomatic velvet glove. The message from the empire is now devastatingly simple: Bend the knee and hand over the lithium at rock-bottom prices, and we will grant you subordinate protection within our feudal hierarchy. Assert your independence, demand fair market value, or bring up human rights, and we will use military and economic force to decimate you for our technological gain.

And these undemocratic chickens have also come home to roost in the United States. This is why we have rolled back or completely removed the Civil Rights protections and privileges for minority groups such as Roe v. Wade, the Voting Rights Act, and soon to be eliminated Birthright Citizenship. The United States can no longer afford to entertain these democratic implementations; not when all energy and efforts must be spent in securing the technocratic future. We can no longer be a beacon of Democracy for the rest of the World to see, and gain any big-ideas of liberty from.

V. The Political Good Cop / Bad Cop Routine

To pull off a systemic heist of this magnitude—to strip-mine the globe and dismantle your own constitutional framework while keeping your domestic population from burning down the castles—you need an incredibly sophisticated political distraction machine.

In the United States, this is achieved through a flawless, systemic “Good Cop / Bad Cop” routine played by the two dominant political factions. Both serve the exact same master (the consolidation of technocratic capital), but they sell it to different audiences using entirely different cultural psychological fuel.

The “Bad Cop” (The Isolationist/Transactionalist MAGA Vanguard)

This faction is the political party that openly emits an inconsiderate, uncooperative global attitude. They don’t pretend to care about international norms, climate targets, or global alliances. They put on the red dunce caps, wrap themselves in the flags of historical victories, and proudly signal to the world that the U.S. is looking out for number one.

This overt hostility serves a vital structural purpose: it creates the chaotic, deregulated global environment necessary to force lopsided, extractive transactions. By telling weak nations they are entirely on their own, it terrifies them into compliance. At home, they use executive emergency powers like a sledgehammer to clear out the environmental and labor regulations that slow down the corporate tech machine. As well as removing the civil rights of those they consider less desirable, and creators of social friction.

The “Good Cop” (The Cooperative/Establishment Democrat Framework)

On the flip side, this faction sells a polite, cooperative global attitude. They talk endlessly about international norms, human rights, labor protections, and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) standards.

But as a tool for creating cheap global resources, this considerate attitude is structurally broken. Why? Because if you are genuinely considerate to other nations—if you audit their labor practices, enforce carbon taxes, and respect their local legal disputes—you are fundamentally acknowledging that their resources have a higher value. Responsibility drives up the cost of business. You cannot get dirt-cheap, hyper-exploitative raw materials if you are busy respecting the civil rights of the people living on top of the copper mine.

Thus, the “Good Cop” serves to legitimize the system and pacify the progressive classes, while the “Bad Cop” is periodically brought in to do the heavy, brutal, deregulated lifting that the tech stack actually requires to survive.

VI. The Treadmill and the Rage-Bait Loop

Meanwhile, what is the domestic population doing while the constitutional scaffolding of their democracy is quietly dismantled to make room for the data centers?

They are running on the treadmill.

The vast majority of citizens do not have the cognitive surplus or the economic bandwidth to analyze system-level geopolitical loops. They are trapped in a state of profound, technological alienation. They are operating in pure survival mode, desperately sprinting just to keep their footing as the corporate controllers change the speed and the incline of daily life out of their control. Skyrocketing housing costs, inflation, a precarious job market automated by early-stage AI, and an endless barrage of algorithmic notifications keep the population in a state of permanent, somatic panic.

And this is where the trap becomes perfectly, diabolically circular: The treadmill causes total psychological exhaustion, and the tech giants sell you the frictionless, on-demand digital “solutions” to cope with that exhaustion. You don’t have the time or energy to cook or engage in physical community, so you use an on-demand app or dissolve into an algorithmic social media feed for a hit of cheap, predictive dopamine. The very tools that are optimizing you out of existence become your only available painkillers.

But humans cannot live with the feeling of total powerlessness forever. When people sprint as hard as they can and still get violently flung off the back of the treadmill, their despair inevitably curdles into raw, volatile fury.

This is the moment where weaponized ressentiment is injected into the body politic. The political managers of the technocratic state don’t try to fix the treadmill; they just control the narrative of why you fell off.

Instead of letting the class conscious gaze upward toward the technocrats and billionaires who are consolidating wealth at an unprecedented, feudal scale, the political rage-baiting machine directs that fury horizontally and downward. They tell the discarded worker: “You didn’t fall off because an unfeeling AI system optimized your job away; you fell off because a minority group, an immigrant, or a college elite got an unfair advantage and pushed you.”

This creates a dark, malicious zero-sum psychology. The people who have been crushed by the system become its most violent volunteer executioners. They don’t want anyone to be spared if they weren’t spared. They will actively put on the red caps and march to defend corporate deregulation, tax cuts for billionaires, and autocratic power grabs, fully convinced they are “rebels” fighting a deep-state tyranny, when in reality, they are acting as the unpaid meat-shields for the technocratic feudal lords.

VII. The Grand Theo-State Projection

To fuel this mindless compliance, the architects of this new order pump the cultural engine full of highly combustible, synthetic nostalgia. They rouse the rabble with the sacred iconography of the American Revolution, the triumphs of WWII, and the myth of a “pure national culture.”

It is a monumental piece of historical fiction. They wave the flags of 1776 and 1945 to justify the installation of a 21st-century corporate dictatorship. They tell the population that if we can just achieve cultural and ethnic purity, the prosperity of the post-war boom will magically return—completely ignoring the macroeconomic reality that the 1950s middle-class boom was caused by a temporary global monopoly on manufacturing, not cultural homogeneity.

But the most sociologically brilliant stroke of this entire transition is the wrap-around narrative: The creation of a high-tech, nuclear-armed, corporate theo-state that sells itself as a Jesus-emulating, god-fearing paradise.

It is the ultimate, convenient projection. High-tech, cold-blooded, military-enforced resource extraction is a horrific thing to look at directly. It requires a massive, holy mask to blind the masses to the machinery. By wrapping technocratic feudalism in the language of divine right and moral superiority, the ruling class achieves absolute absolution. The structural violence inflicted on vulnerable nations abroad and marginalized communities at home is reframed not as corporate greed, but as a righteous, civilizing, defensive mission.

This is exactly the reason why Elon Musk has informed us that "empathy" is a major weakness in the West. He wants a population of unflinching Americans when they see people being brutalized for economic gain, both at home and abroad.

VIII. The Inevitable Horizon: WWIII and the Feudal Lockdown

So, where does this historical arc land us?

We have come full circle. The emergency powers that FDR used in the 1930s to save a collapsing capitalist democracy are now being deployed in the 2020s to build its high-tech replacement. The post-WWII world order, which used the victory of World War II to establish a global playground for neoliberal trade, has reached its terminal evolutionary phase. It has given birth to an AI technological infrastructure whose physical resource requirements are so massive, so destructive, and so urgent that the democratic framework itself has become an impediment to its growth.

The U.S. is a nation whose constitutional democracy is undeniably in structural decline. But unlike the dying empires of the past, this declining superpower possesses a permanent, unassailable global insurance policy: a massive, modernized nuclear arsenal.

As the old rules-based global order fractures, the U.S. is not fading quietly into the night. It is reasserting itself as a paranoid, technocratic theo-state protected by nuclear weapons. It is actively instigating the destruction of the very international system it created in the 1940s, tearing down the global glue of self-governance and sovereignty to clear the path for raw, military-backed resource extraction.

The ultimate, historical irony is that just as World War II was the violent midwife that birthed the era of global neoliberal democracy, World War III will be the kinetic engine that establishes the new world order of Technocratic Feudalism.

The only question left for the individual running on the treadmill is one of pure, survivalist immunity: In a world where the global commons have been dismantled, where international law is a dead letter, and where human rights are treated as an inefficient friction, wealth becomes the only viable shield against total subjugation. If you do not own a stake in the data creation, the technologies, the energy, or the raw mineral basins, you are no longer a citizen with a voice in a self-governing democracy. You are simply a resource to be harvested, optimized, or discarded by the machine. The treadmill is accelerating, the incline is increasing, and the technocratic lords are quietly adjusting the controls while the crowd cheers for a past that is never coming back.
