Stagnation.
Political stagnation, inventiveness stagnation- where will it lead
The normal path in nature is-- conception, birth, growth, maturity, expansion, stagnation, death, decay, disintegration.
We as the British nation, and to some extent the whole developed world, are stagnating. The phase after stagnation- in the natural way of all things, -is death followed by decay.
Why are we stagnating? I am sure there are many opinions.
Some things may be indicators rather than cause, but the now universally normal reaction to any and every situation by every government, is to spend more money, and/or increase restriction of freedoms. One, now normal reaction to, for example, increased accidents during any form of travel is, to slow it down, apply restrictions. Spend tax money on enforcement The basic rule of examine cause and find ways to solve the problem, are swept away- just spend more (other people’s tax money) and slow or stop, are the only things considered. This is stagnation.
Not thinking of alternative movement, only of slowing and restriction, is stagnation of thought, word, and deed. We have government by bureaucracy even when we elect politicians, at national and local levels, we still end up governed by bureaucrats. Sometimes this is because, as it often seems in Britain anyway, most politicians, are trained as administrators not decision makers. This is especially noticeable when decisions under pressure are required. The problems come from the fact that administrations prefer stability to rapid change. They like things to stay the same or go slower, so they have time to keep the paperwork straight, keep control and have no need for new decision. If a change is suggested they form committees to discuss how they will approach the proposed change, but first there must be a group meeting to discuss who will be on the committee. When finally, they get to discuss the proposed change, they set a target date for the decision. By the time any consensus for a recommendation to the politicians, (never a firm decision for which they can be accountable) with alternatives is made, the situation demanding the decision has changed. Politian’s then consult their own closed circle of political allies and determine which decision will bring the most political support for their own career, having made this decision they allocate a target to achieve it. The purpose of the target is to shift debate from the actual decision, to how to achieve what they have decided. All of this causes delay. The target is handed back to the administrative bureaucracy, and they are tasked with setting up the framework to achieve it. This means more committees and allocation of funds- Other people’s money. (Tax receipts.) More delay and more restriction on the freedom of the mass of the people.
Causes of this stagnation include:-
The change in application of democratic decisions. Democracy used to mean governance by the majority for the majority. The majority is always right. But now consideration for the sensitivities of minorities is the controlling aspect of any and all debates and actions. As a result, everything has to go at a speed acceptable to the slowest, adventure and risk taking are ruled out because a minority are afraid. Progress must be slowed to accommodate the most reactionary. I use the words progress and reactionary in the true dictionary meaning not the politically usurped meaning. i.e. progress is movement forward towards a desired objective and reactionary means against change.
Globalisation causes “invention” to be suppressed through the predominance of the marketing and investment power of the global businesses.
Another obvious one is ever increasing populations meaning all effort is focused on coping with the increase and not on improving individual lives.
Also; Suddenly allowing diverse social structures and beliefs to reside in same geographic boundaries where there had been recently,- only one. Again, the focus is on managing the obvious problems this brings, rather that improving the lives of the indigenous people.
Another one of the main causes of intellectual stagnation, is the education system, which ignores the basic principle that teaching only imparts what others tell you. While experience is what you learn from yourself . All the focus is on being able to accurately regurgitate teaching.
Food is also becoming standardised, at least the mass-produced supermarket stuff is- It may be suggested that since the majority eat this stuff it must be right, that is democracy? But do they purchase and eat out of genuine choice? A good cook can create good food from basic ingredients. This will be different from the mass marketed stuff, whether it is better is a matter of individual taste. Mass produced foods are heavily marketed, use social fashion and constant media conditioning to contribute to purchasing decisions. The lack of training, time, energy and maybe motivation, probably contribute to the decision to buy rather than make. Some even seem to consider it cheaper but that would probably be unusual even if it was true.
Marketing is involved in just about every bit of modern human activity from food to Politics, from self-expression to entertainment. The choice of which social media platform to carry an individual’s opinions is guided by a combination of technical ability, platform availability and personal belief, but that belief is subject to marketing inputs. The huge power of the marketing divisions of the global giants is used to standardise the desires and taste of very big proportions of the world population, this standardisation of taste adds to the stagnation.
The global producers need standardisation of demand, they are not designed to cope with variations in demand and so their predominance and superior marketing, all adds to stagnation.
