When the Duchess of Sussex was a senior member of the royal family, she was not free to vote or to speak publicly about politics.

Months ago Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, wouldn't have been able to speak publicly about anything relating to voting. That's because she and her husband Prince Harry were living in England as senior members of the royal family. Royals do not vote, and they are not allowed to share their opinions about politics in public.

Harry and Meghan were able to keep their titles as Duke and Duchess of Sussex even though they stop working as royals in January 2020 that went into effect last April. They didn't waste any time to carve out a new path for themselves when they moved to the United States. Last June, Meghan backed Black Lives Matter in an emotional speech that brought tears to some graduates at her former Immaculate Heart High School.

A few days ago, Meghan warned people that if they are not voting then they are complicit. She used the same words that Michelle Obama used in her speech on the first night of the Democratic National Convention. Obama used those words to encourage everyone to vote in the upcoming Presidential Election on November 3, 2020.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been involved in some political events since they moved to the United States. The public doesn't know if they have officially declared a political party. However, there have been some obvious clues.

Meghan Markle's Speech

The Duchess of Sussex spoke via video from her new Montecito house during an event for Michelle Obama's When We All Vote and the United States of Women campaign.

Meghan warned about the danger of voter suppression. She said, "We vote to honor those who came before us and to protect those who will come after us. " She added, "Because that's what community is all about and that's specifically what this election is all about. " At the time, she reminded people that much work still has to be done because the very important election is only 75 days away.

To give more power to her speech, Meghan reminded the audience that we have more at stake this year, and voting is extremely important if we want to see the change we all need and deserve.

During her speech, she recognized the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment which gave some women the right to vote. Even so, the fight for suffrage still continues for women of color.

Hopefully, Meghan's speech has given people something to think about. She clearly stated, "If you aren't going out there and voting then you're complicit. If you're complacent, then you're complicit."

Can Meghan Markle Vote in the Upcoming Election?

YES, she can! Meghan will be able to vote because she is still a citizen of the United States. If she had remained a royal and living in England, that would not be the case. In an interview with Marie Claire, the Duchess of Sussex gave reasons that she is exercising her right to vote because she knows what it's like to have a voice and she knows what it's like to not have a voice.

When Prince Harry and Meghan stepped down as royals, she said she would be more politically engaged. When Meghan was a senior member of the royal family, she was frustrated because she was not able to vote or speak out about politics. Now that she is free to vote, she says she certainly will do so. She wants others to make that same decision to vote in the upcoming election.

Meghan says she believes a quote by Kate Sheppard, a leader in the suffragist movement in New Zealand. Sheppard said, "Do not think your single vote does not matter much. The rain that refreshes the parched ground is made up of single drops." Meghan added. "That is why I will vote."
