Equality and Hate Crimes

Are we overcomplicating a simple issue?

Equality and hate crimes.

Are we in danger of getting too legalistic and too bogged down in fine detail abut discrimination and Equality? The law has introduced the notion that “hate” is both definable and is a crime. Hating is now illegal.

Hate is defined, in my dictionary as -to dislike intensely, detest, intense dislike.

Dislike is defined, as- to consider unpleasant or disagreeable, a feeling of aversion or antipathy.

Surely it is simple, all people are treated equally. If Misogyny is a crime then Misandry is also a crime, it really is that simple. Why are there long winded debates and endless postulation of exemptions? It is obviously wrong to discriminate against a person because they have a black skin, thus it is also wrong to discriminate against some one with white, yellow or any-other coloured skin. If male and female are held to be legally, and morally, equal; then all aspects of life should be gender free. What is considered a punishable view, if held by a male about females; it must also be punishable, if held by a female about males. This is equality. This is simple. There can not be any exceptions.

The introduction of the idea that hate is a crime, as well as being an emotion, has introduced not only legal confusion, one that lawyers can exploit to their own financial benefit; but also introduces the concept that how a person feels, can be illegal. This is a very dangerous path.

It is time governments stopped making lawyers rich and started to simplify laws. Make them all inclusive and simple. Then police and courts of justice, can stop wasting money on lawyers and we can all get on with our lives.

If an action is illegal when carried out by one person, then it is illegal when carried out by anyone. Everyone obeys the same law. Gender, race, religion, ethnicity or any other label, are irrelevant. It is either an illegal act or it is not, the colour or gender of the perpetrator has nothing to do with this. Simply make one statement that covers all aspects of the law and life. All people are equal. Make this the opening statement in the writing of any legislation and amend all existing legislation by adding it to it.

The way laws have been made to prevent discrimination, may have been well intentioned but all it has done is emphasis the differences between people. The way these laws are framed encourages bigotry and hate. We have created a race relations industry, so that some people are getting very rich from ensuring there are racial problems. There is not so much talk of “positive discrimination” these days but a lot about a need to have specific numbers of this race that gender, in any group. There is an artificial drive to achieve diversity in employment. This sort of interference in life ensures there are racial tensions. Who gets what job should only be about the ability to do that job. If some one selects a person for employment based on anything other than ability to do the job, then they are breaking the rule of, all people are equal. If this rule were enshrined in law they would be breaking the law. Simple.

Derogatory talk about any particular race or sexual orientation, can depending on the circumstances, be a crime of attempting to incite discrimination. The law as it stands in Britain claims that this can also be a hate crime. Hatred is an emotion, so how are the police to prove that the person speaking has hatred in their mind? Or has the law been changed so the speaker must now prove they did not have hate in their minds? If so how do you prove this? Making a hate crime out of the crime of inciting discrimination, is a totally unnecessary complication. Only lawyers will gain from this, may be they caused it to be added to criminal law.

Politicians of all parts of the political spectrum, need to come together, forget party politics and they need to make a united statement that; they believe all people are equal and they will all support any law that says so. This does NOT say they are all of equal ability. Such a claim is self evidentially wrong. We are not all of equal abilities, but our gender or racial origin, our age or social standing, are not relative to our level of ability in any particular topic or action.
