In the past 3 weeks, we’ve witnessed the slow growth of a heartbreaking virus that has taken the lives of almost 40,000 people around the globe (37,538 to be more specific). And many organizations have started to move to help and provide medical material to local or national hospitals and health staff.

Besides the hard-work of figures like Bill Gates, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, the football player Drew Brees, the fashion industry also has taken matters on this gigantic issue. Moreover, beauty and wellness brands have suspended their services and closed their shopping centers around the globe.

For instance, the ‘Unilever United States’, the house of brands like Dove and Trésemme announced in march 27th their plan that aims to support Americans impacted by this virus. Also, Unilever will donate more than $8 million to help people affected by the pandemic as well as provide food, products for personal hygiene and home cleaning products.

The brand has also donated more than 200,000 masks to local hospitals y New Jersey. Furthermore, Unilever declared that all its products manufactured will be donated to those impacted by the COVID-19, being this an estimated $12 million of aid for those in need.

On the other hand, multiple brands decided to close their stores in the U.S., Canada, Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, to complete with the quarantine established in the U.S., such as Nike, Urban Outfitters, Supreme, Glossier, and Sephora.

Now, let’s move on to the most luxurious brands in the market. And most of them have shown interest to preserve the health of their personal and of their communities such as Gucci. The Italian label has provided over 1,1000,000 surgical masks and 55,000 medical overalls. Supplies that we are lacking more and more. Besides, the Italian brand has urged its fans to make donations to the WHO’s initiative using the #GucciCommunity on their social media channels.

The American lifestyle brand, Ralph Lauren has pledged $10 million to coronavirus relief efforts, is this the biggest donation by a luxury company (for now). In the same way as Gucci, Ralph Lauren has started the production of 250,000 face masks and 25,000 isolation gowns for health care workers. Due to this actions Ralph Lauren released and statement urging people to help one another:

"We believe that no matter who you are or where you are from, we are all connected. That is why we are taking significant action to help our teams and communities through this crisis."

Another Italian label that has financed local hospitals is Prada S.p.A that is supporting the new hospitals in Milan. Like Gucci, announced the production of 110,000 masks and 80,000 medical garments which will be delivered to Tuscan hospitals by April 6th.

Without delay, Chanel has announced the launch of their face masks as the brand joins the fight against coronavirus. At the moment the brand is developing a prototype mask that will be signed off by the French authorities.

“Today we are mobilizing our workforce and our partners... to produce protective masks and blouses,” Chanel said recently on their official statement.

Additionally, Christian Siriano offered to help sew face masks in the wake of a possible medical supply shortage in New York, also he shared his experience through social media:

Donatella and Allegra Versace have pledged €200,000 to the ICU at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. In the same way, Armani has donated $1.4 million to hospitals and health organizations in Italy. On the other hand, Estée Lauder donated $2 million to Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) to support their efforts around the world that lack substantial resources to combat the pandemic virus.

Furthermore, the French label announced to WWD that it will be reopening its New York factory to produce hydroalcoholic gel:

“The Estée Lauder Companies is proud to contribute to the broader COVID-19 relief efforts by reopening our Melville manufacturing facility this week to produce hand sanitizer for high-need groups and populations, including front-line medical staff.”

Last but not least, H&M donated $500,000 to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund, as well as Saks Fifth Avenue that pledged $600,000 to organizations that support the COVID-19 relief efforts. The Spanish brand, Mango will also donate two million masks to the Spanish Ministry of Health’s. And another brand that will donate masks is Burberry, the English label announced that it will manufacture non-surgical masks and gowns that follow the guidelines set by the Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency.

As shown above, we can witness for once the existence of solidarity coming from fashion and beauty brands, which are contributing to their local and global non-profit organizations to defeat the virus and help people to recover from their illness.
