Man Watches the Drastic Transformation of a Town Over Forty Years

After finishing law school in West Virginia, Brandon moved to the small mill community of Bucksport, Maine. It was unclear why he settled on Bucksport in particular, but one possible explanation was that there was no legal firm in the area. He could have chosen to reside in any of the many picturesque nearby towns, but he chose Bucksport because of its convenient location near his workplace. He went into business for himself and shortly had a partner with whom he ran a modest legal practice. He and his family lived in a lovely home on a hill overlooking the city that he had purchased for a fair price.

That was back in the '70s, and since then a lot has changed. The mill was still operating, and its expansion contributed to the town's meteoric rise to the status of a mini-city. Since retiring from the firm and relocating to a beautiful house on the shores of a small lake, much had altered in Brandon's life as well. He had since been divorced twice, but his present marriage was his longest at nearly twenty years. Brandon finally succeeded on the third try.

He maintained ownership of the townhouse he had leased to the same couple for many years. They were getting elderly and sick of the cold, so they packed up and headed for warmer climes in the south. Brandon was saddened by their departure because they had been excellent renters who never fell behind on their payments. His townhouse was nice, and though it didn't have a particularly breathtaking panorama (since there wasn't much to see), it was prime real estate and could be leased out for a hefty sum due to its location.

As much as Brandon's existence had altered, so too had the city he cherished. Part of the reason why safety was declining was that young people were dropping out of education in large numbers and turning to drugs. Many addicts were financially unable to maintain their drug use and resorted to minor crimes to fund their habit. Most locals wouldn't be able to afford Brandon's rent, but he wasn't being unreasonable because his taxes had gone up and he might attract a bad renter if he priced the place too low. He had heard some terrible tales about renters from other people.

The building was deserted despite its proximity to the town square. There was a lot of noise and motion outside the home, but someone had broken in at night to steal some valuables. The house was virtually empty, so they had to settle for taking the copper pipes from the basement. The local police informed Brandon the next day after discovering the shattered window.

After that, Brandon realized he needed to take precautions by installing a security system in the residence. Since he had no actual intention of returning to town, he would have to hire security guards to keep an eye on his property in the meantime. About 39 minutes north of Bucksport, in the larger city of Bangor, he located a branch of a well-known home security firm. He called them that day, and the security system was installed that very afternoon. The company's professionalism pleased him, and he felt better knowing that his home was safe while he was away.

A few months later, he was relieved to find reliable renters interested in renting the property. He was so pleased with the service they provided that he decided to keep the home protection system for his tenants. Brandon never had another problem with the home, so that's not surprising.
