From Prada to Calvin Klein vibrant colour prevailed on this year’s runways. Perhaps signaling a renewed optimism in the face of worldwide Covid-19 restrictions lifting, yellow, especially, prevailed. From egg yolk to buttercup to primary yellow and Pantone’s colour of the year Illuminating, a sunny pastel shade that oozes spring, shades of yellow dominated virtual fashion shows in London, New York City, Paris and Milan.
Yellow is more than a pretty colour. Traditionally associated with freshness, the sun and new beginnings, according to the chakra system it corresponds to the solar plexus chakra, seat of personal power and self confidence. This chakra also governs the metabolism and digestive organs.
Wearing yellow, then, not only places you at the cutting edge of seasonal fashion trends, it may also bolster your confidence and sense of self, and strengthen your digestion. Win win!
Not sure how to wear yellow? There are plenty of ways to incorporate this season’s hottest colour into your wardrobe for a fun, fresh look without going yellow from head to toe if you don’t wish to do so.
To give you some ideas here are my favourite yellow pieces for Spring/Summer 2021.
1. BAGS
A vibrant yellow shoulder bag like Ted Baker’s sporty lemon cross body or Prada’s egg yolk leather chain version is a great way to play with yellow without letting it take over. Try a yellow bag with an all black or all white outfit.
2. DRESSES
A yellow dress ticks two major trends for Spring and Summer 2021. Whatever your style or occasion, there is an option for you. Favored by celebrities as wide ranging as Kate Middleton and Courtney Love The Vampire’s Wife specialises in feminine, beautifully tailored frocks with a retro twist that work both as daywear and for an evening out. This frosted yellow maxi dress from their latest collection is no exception. Ted Baker’s sunny yellow midi dress has a super flattering neckline and A-line skirt that suits all shapes and sizes. Wear it to the office with flats and a fitted then change into heels and add a clutch for a night out.
3. SWEATERS
Spring may be upon us but we’re not quite done with sweater weather yet. Prada’s pale yellow cut out number is one of my current favourites. Paloma Wool makes quirky, contemporary knitwear like this turmeric and burgundy fitted pixel motif sweater. Best of all the company uses sustainable fabrics and ethical manufacturing processes. If you want to go the sweatshirt route this buttercup option by New Look - recently featured in Cosmopolitan’s best jumpers for 2021 chosen by a fashion editor - shouts happiness. Literally.
4. BLAZERS
A yellow blazer is more wearable than you think. H&M’s double breasted butter coloured version is a case in point. It’s, summery and super flattering with jeans and a white tee. Tory Burch’s candy striped offering is a breath of fresh spring air, while Etro’s vibrant yellow floral print number brings a glamorous kimono style vibe to the blazer trend. Try it with palazzo pants and a bra top.
5. SHOES
From Tory Burch’s floral print espadrilles with detachable ankle straps to Prada’s sunny yellow platform trainers, yellow shoes are everywhere this season. There’s a pair to suit all budgets. I particularly like Asos’s square toed braided mustard mules. If price is no object, Roger Vivier’s creamy yellow pumps are absolutely delectable.
6. SUNGLASSES
Yellow sunglasses will add an instant cool vibe to your summertime outfits. From palest butter yellow by Izipi to Fendi’s sharp, hot yellow sunnies, there is a style for you. Take your pick of vintage and contemporary shapes.
7. MAKEUP
My personal favourite way of incorporating 2021’s top colour: slicking on some bright yellow eyeliner. Nyx’s yellow eyeliner and NARS’s egg yolk yellow eyeshadow are must buys, while Revolution’s super affordable eyeshadow palette contains a pretty selection of gold, rust and peach colours alongside a shade of bright yellow.
How will you wear yellow this summer? Which shade of yellow is your favourite? Comment and let me know!
