Jewelry has been capturing the human imagination since ancient times. Before the rise of metallurgy, amulets were created of semi-precious stones in China and ancient Sumer, dating popular jewelry to the Neolithic period, about 5,000 years ago.

In our day, jewelry takes many forms, from the simplicity of bracelets of braided leather and fiber to the elegance and extravagance of high jewelry. Simple or extravagant, the jewelry market is as diverse and varied as we are. Let’s talk about contemporary jewelry and the innovative, modern designs being worn with today’s fashion on runways all over the world. How are modern jewelry designers and artisans innovating to create designs that speak to contemporary fashion?

Fine Jewelry: Classic Bling Meets Innovation

There is no commercial sector that hasn’t been impacted by the pandemic and fine jewelry is included, with sales rising meteorically in 2021 and again in 2022. Now, at the mid-point of 2023, sales have stabilized but the design innovation spurred by increased public interest has surged.

While some fine jewelers have objected to the introduction of technologies like 3D printing, others are embracing the new design possibilities they present. Painstakingly intricate engraving, once only achieved with incredible skill and significant time, can now be done electronically. Fine jewelry collections now seek to add an element of novelty, modernizing the conservative reputation of the sector with new practices and tendencies.

With the advent of rapid laser-cutting, fully-faceted diamonds can now be produced more efficiently than by traditional methods. Specifically, UV laser technology is capable of rapidly producing finished diamonds with more than 50 facets at a single pass. Moreover, Artificial Intelligence will impact the diamond market, via grading diamond quality. These innovations in contemporary jewelry—and many others—were displayed in abundance at this year’s COUTURE Show in Las Vegas, NV.

The World’s Most Finely-Curated Jewelry Show

Held at the Wynn Las Vegas, this year’s COUTURE Show is a key bellwether of trends in the jewelry industry, particularly with respect to fine and high jewelry. From this one jewelry trade show, costume jewelry trends trickle outward to Main Street chains, reflecting the dictates of the industry’s greatest exposition of bling, innovation, and high-level design.

Showcasing fine and high jewelry and timepieces from renowned legacy brands, every year COUTURE brings buyers from retailers like Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus to see the world’s most innovative new jewelry designs. COUTURE is the jewelry industry’s premier networking event, bringing forth the talents of designers working with high-end brands.

There are several key trends emerging from the COUTURE show which will heavily influence jewelry design in the coming years. Let’s take a look at these and see how they mesh with some of the general fine jewelry innovations I’ve pointed out above.

Wanderlust

In 2023, the joy of bursting from our pandemic-spun cocoons continues to drive a surge in travel. Some of COUTURE’s innovative participants expressed the post-pandemic consumer travel obsession in pieces finely wrought of mosaic and polished stone. Worked in fine metal wiring, the trend’s nostalgic styling is also optimistic, dovetailing with contemporary fashion’s exuberant flourishes of feathers, fringe, and all manner of embellishment. Freedom rings loudly across the fashion and jewelry skies!

A pendant proclaiming, “Capri” in gold metal script depicts a cloisonne beach scene, replete with Capri’s blue and white striped beach umbrellas. Others depict sailboats cleaving the sea and airplanes jetting to exotic climes. These intricate pieces serve as miniature postcards, wrought in opal, turquoise, and enamel with diamond accents.

The artisan beauty of this trend can now be translated into a popular retail version, using new cabling techniques, 3D printing, and laser-cutting. The fine work involved in these pieces can be readily reinterpreted for a wider market with new tech that moves the trend into the mainstream, where it’s bound to resonate.

Insects and Robots

Butterflies fluttering, bees buzzing, and beetles beetling are a strong theme in fine jewelry this year, with beetles leading the entomological pack. Scarabs have been a strong theme in jewelry since the days of the Ancient Egyptians, with the scarab beetle representing rebirth.

This year’s COUTURE scarab theme seeks a connection to the natural world while acknowledging the crises challenging it. Just as the pandemic has influenced jewelry design in the travel trend, the global threat of climate change is the genesis of the new scarab impulse. One of the show’s designers employed the ethically-sourced wings of scarab beetles for her designs, wrapping her beetles in 18K gold. The scarab calls us to environmental renewal.

Meanwhile, articulated robots in precious gemstones and gold danced at COUTURE as well. Robot pendants with moving limbs signal more of the “swing from the chandeliers” post-pandemic tendency. At the same time, they hint at the rise of Artificial Intelligence. This trend dialogues well with the effervescent diversity and insouciance of contemporary fashion, while adding a moment of non-commital social commentary.

Sophisticated, XPandable, Italian

In 2016, respected Italian jewelry house Picchiotti introduced their unique Xpandable technology. Infusing luxury with comfort filled a niche in the market too long ignored, creating jewelry items that fit well, whether necklaces, rings, or bracelets. The items are also reversible, with a simple twist producing a different effect on the opposite side of the piece.

At COUTURE 2023, the collectible gems giant Picchiotti presented additions to its Dots collection, fired by rubies studded in nests of brilliant diamonds and rose gold ornamentation. The refinement of the pieces meets the innovation of XPandable technology, giving consumers something they both want and need—comfort to go with their bling! Innovations like Expandable and at Fope, Flex-It, have paved the way for a less traditional approach in fine jewelry, creating inroads for new frontiers in jewelry design.

As Fashion Goes, So Goes Jewelry

Twin industries, fashion and jewelry, speak to any given moment in history. Hemlines rise during times of prosperity and dip when the going gets lean. Jewelry is modest in times of war and effusive in times of peace. Innovation in jewelry follows the same social currents as fashion and its sartorial interpretations of the consumer’s emotional demands.

The innovations we’re seeing in modern jewelry design are concurrently impacting fashion, influencing and revolutionizing it in ways that speak to design innovation, consumer access, and efficiencies resulting in increased sustainability. Artificial Intelligence and 3D printing are now common and increasingly ubiquitous in both industries, promising an era of exciting design growth and innovation.
