October Challenge Winners

A behind-the-scenes glimpse at the Vocal Curation Team's top picks from October.

By Vocal Curation TeamPublished about 5 hours ago • 1 min read

October turned out to be a much stranger place than we expected, and we loved seeing where everyone took it. From familiar autumn scenes to some wonderfully unexpected settings, this challenge brought out a lot of creativity and imagination.

What stood out was how much personality each writer brought to their version of the month, from the funny and playful to the nostalgic and occasionally unsettling.

🏆 Grand Prize

Follow The Black Cat by Marilyn Glover

Marilyn Glover makes October feel like a place best explored on four paws. Following her mischievous black cat through orchards and pumpkin patches is a blast, and there's something infectious about the energy and enthusiasm she brings to every line.

🎖️ Winners

October Is A Carry-Out by John R. Godwin

This was a fun, wonderfully strange take on the prompt, complete with creaking doors, expiring aspirin, and Christmas lights that have gone up a little too early.

October Rain by Canute Limarider

Rogaine, Christopher Cross, and a maple-leaf door make for an unusual trip into October. Canute Limarider brings a little humor to a tender poem about memory, longing, and the places we wish we could revisit.

English Breakfast by Mackenzie Davis

Mackenzie Davis gives us a wonderfully peculiar version of October, where even the leaves in the gutter become a cup of tea.

skimmer by Erin Latham Shea

There's something both nostalgic and unsettling about Erin Latham Shea's October. The scratchy costumes and candy-sick sleepovers feel familiar, but those wolf spiders walking on water are harder to shake.
