Having access to unique and informed statistics is a key part of the Vocal experience. We use data to run our business, and we know you use data to run yours. Whether that means using readership stats to determine which of your stories are the most relatable, earnings to determine where the highest returns are, or subscriber stats to determine how wide your reach is, we want you to have access to the data you need to succeed.

Our mission is to reward creators for their creativity, but to do that, creators need to know which stories are resonating with their subscribers, which stories have struck a chord, and which ideas need to be taken back to the drawing board. The Vocal Stats and Wallet pages already allow creators to see data related to reads, bonuses, and subscribers, and now, we're excited to introduce Reader Insights to complement that existing data.

What are Reader Insights?

Do you ever wish you could get inside the heads of your readers and find out what they liked, what they loved, and perhaps what they didn't particularly enjoy about your work? With Reader Insights, your readers and subscribers can leave helpful and constructive feedback on your stories. And of course, this feature works both ways—you can now leave another creator an Insight to help boost their morale, or help them tweak a new effort or idea.

For now, there are three distinct Insights that you can provide to a creator.

  1. Good Effort: "You have potential. Keep practicing and don’t give up!"
  2. Nice Work: "Very well written. Keep up the good work!"
  3. Outstanding: "Excellent work. Looking forward to reading more!"

You can also send additional Insights to indicate what you particularly enjoyed about a certain story. For example, if the story was especially heartwarming, eye-opening, or engaging, you can check those bespoke boxes and let the creator know what their strengths are. As those Insights accumulate over time, creators will be able to better shape and direct their future on Vocal.

How to use Reader Insights

To send Reader Insights to a creator, simply scroll to the bottom of a story and click "Add your insights." On the next page, select one of the three primary Insights, and then add additional feedback by checking the boxes next to the qualities you found particularly strong in the story. When you're satisfied with your feedback, click "Submit Insights."

As a creator, if you want to see what people are saying about one of your stories, navigate to that story on your profile and any Reader Insights will appear in a window at the bottom of the page.

We hope this new feature helps both readers and creators feel more connected to each other. There are more updates to come that will continue to help bridge that gap, including commenting on stories. But, one update at a time! For now, if you're a reader, please consider sending Insights to those who choose to share their work with the world. If you're a creator, we hope these new stats help you continue to create, grow, and flourish to the best of your ability on Vocal.
