The Life and Death of Juniper

In the United States, anti-transgender violence is at an all-time high, with almost ten transgender Americans having been murdered so far in 2026. Most remain nameless to everyone other than family and friends: ignored by the media, forgotten by society, as though their lives didn't matter at all. Every day, at least one trans person across the world is murdered in a transphobic attack. Most of the time, we never learn their names.
On Wednesday, May 6, the White House released the United States Counterterrorism Strategy: a sixteen page document outlining enforcement strategies against those the government deems an existential threat. This document describes three categories of threats: "Narcoterrorists and Transnational Gangs", "Legacy Islamist Terrorists", and "Violent Left-Wing Extremists, including Anarchists and Anti-Fascists". It describes violence committed by "anti-Christian, left-wing extremists", while failing to acknowledge the insurmountable violence committed by Christian white men.
This counterterrorism strategy is another attack on trans people by the American government: closing with a warning from the president simply stating "We will find you and we will kill you." The report elaborates on its plan to target and neutralize what it considers violent secular political groups, and defines these groups as "anti-American, anarchist, and pro-transgender". The document may have been compiled as a result of the murder of Charlie Kirk: an incident the government continues to blame on transgender people, despite multiple reports disputing it.
Statistics taken across many sources estimate that ninety seven percent of mass shootings in the United States are committed by cisgender white men, usually followers of right-wing extremism. Despite this, violent attacks on transgender people and immigrants continue, with any attempt at self-defense written off as 'terrorism'. Amidst the record-breaking level of anti-trans laws passed in Texas since 2021, a growing wave of queer Texans have been relocating to Seattle: a city considered by most to be progressive and queer-friendly. Such a high level of relocation has occurred that the Seattle LGBT Commission has urged the mayor and city council to declare a civil emergency to focus on displaced LGBTQ+ people. This would allow the city to stop relying on disorganized volunteer efforts and instead direct money and resources towards shelter and legal aid.
On Sunday, May 10, nineteen-year-old Juniper Blessing was stabbed forty times in the housing complex where she lived. With wounds to the arms, head, neck, shoulders, and hands, she was then left in a laundry room to be discovered by a fellow student. Juniper attended the University of Washington, where she had been studying Atmospheric and Earth Sciences. She was a lover of Pokemon, dogs, video games, meteorology, jewelry, and singing: something she did commonly. In a dedicated Reddit thread, friends of Juniper describe her as a kind, confident soul with a heart of gold: a young woman with so much life left to live.
As transgender people across the country continue to be targeted, anti-trans rhetoric leeches into everyday society at an astounding pace. Just three days after Juniper's violent murder, an event by Turning Point USA was scheduled at University of Seattle: an anti-trans speech by a detransitioner. After an influx of messages demanding the organization cancel the event, it was postponed by the speaker, who blamed "ANTIFA" for rallying against her, and claimed they had made threats on her life. It's this kind of hateful narrative that puts the lives of trans people at risk and adds to the growing list of transphobic hate crimes.
On or around May 15, the thirty-one-year old killer of Juniper turned himself into police, where he awaits arraignment on homicide charges. Inside Red Square, the central plaza of the University of Seattle, a memorial was created for Juniper: filled with candles, handwritten notes, trans flags, flowers, and stuffed Pokemon. Friends of Juniper have encouraged others to donate stuffed Pokemon to shelters in Juniper's name.
