The History of Pride

Chancellor Sam Hawgood stated in his State of the College Address on October 4, 2016, that UC San Francisco is adopting a standard arrangement of values to establish a reasonable route for every member of the UCSF people group as we work together to achieve our primary aim.

At its retreat on October 25, 2016, members of the administration group of the Chancellor welcomed the arrangement of general qualities, believing in and supporting the notion of "One UCSF," which unites us in our shared viewpoint and dedication.

These ideals, which were first adopted by the UCSF Clinical Center a long time ago, are grouped together under the acronym PRIDE, which stands for impressive talent, regard, trustworthiness, variety, and greatness. These are important fundamental principles for everyone who works, studies, teaches, and conducts research at UCSF.

Even though we have never formally stated PRIDE as a set of ground principles, they are UCSF values and are consistently demonstrated throughout the College in a variety of ways. This arrangement of all-inclusive characteristics is consistent with UCSF's Local Area Standards and Set of Principles.

The word "pride" refers to a feeling of satisfaction with one's accomplishments or the successes of others to whom one is closely allied, such as our UCSF people group.

Within the Lesbian, Gay, sexually unbiased, Transsexual, Eccentric, and Intersex (LGBTQI) population, the word "pride" refers to strength, collectivity, and way of life as well as protection from discrimination and violence. Its congruent iconography, such as rainbow tones, conveys to viewers that LGBTQI people are welcomed as important members of the community.

These definitions are not widely used. This glossary is provided to help others understand the meaning of certain phrases more thoroughly, though not entirely. You could try to think about asking someone what they mean when they use a term, especially if they are using it to describe their character. Every person should eventually define themselves for themselves and, in turn, define a term for themselves.

This vocabulary includes words like ableism and incapacity that aren't necessarily associated with characters' sexual orientation or gender. These concepts are crucial to comprehend as a component of our main objective to combat any forms of mistreatment that have an impact on the various, interconnected personalities possessed by people from our neighborhood.

UCSF, a leading institution and the second-largest manager in San Francisco, fully understands and embraces the significance and connotations of the word pride to the LGBTQI community and their partners around the world.

Building a collaborative culture that is united by shared values is important for UCSF now and positions the university well for the future. Values serve to set expectations, provide direction, and create a culture that directs our activities as a binding arrangement of convictions. All employees, staff, students, and learners must understand and adhere to general guiding principles as UCSF continues to grow and scope and expands the variety of undertakings and unusual tasks we undertake together.

More specifically, these are UCSF's PRIDE Values and how they can be upheld via our daily activities:

P - Incredible skill: The ability to connect with everyone, including coworkers, patients, guests, and understudies, emphatically and cooperatively.

Regarding others with the utmost consideration, being courteous and kind, and acting with the greatest consideration for others are all examples of the letter R.

I - Trustworthiness: Being open-minded, dependable, and moral; consistently choosing the best course of action; without sacrificing reality; and being sincere and fair.

D - Variety: To value and celebrate the differences in others, creating an environment of worth and consideration with fantastic opportunities for everyone to reach their full potential.

E - Greatness: To be dedicated, persuasive, imaginative, and certain; to continually give your best; and to reassure and assist others in order for them to be successful in everything they undertake.
