1. She’s a Rainbow By: The Rolling Stones

She’s a Rainbow comes to mind for obvious reasons, referencing the rainbow flag that represents the lgbtqa+ community. But a personal interpretarion is how a sapphic or wlw tend to carry themselves in a way that does not cater to the male gaze and how it can come off differently. Even the aura or vibe can feel different, almost as if she is a rainbow herself.

2. Easily By: Bruno Major

Easily speaks on the difficulties that come with any relationship, but when heard through the ears of a member of the lgbt+ community can reach different depths and speak to the obstacles that stand in the way of a non-traditional relationship and how “just because it won’t come easily, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try”.

3. The Pursuit of Happiness By: Kid Cudi

It’s said that everyone has the right to love liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but for the lgbtq+ community this has not always been the case. The pursuit of happiness by Kid Cudi encapsulates the feeling of freedom that comes from being oneself, having the right to be who you are, and love who you love on your own pursuit of happiness.

4. I’m Not In Love By: Kelsey Lu

The process of discovering ones sexuality or gender identity is not always love light and rainbows. It is at times a struggle to accept these aspects oneself, I’m Not In Love by Kelsey Lu represents the internal struggle and denial that may come along with the process of understanding and acceptance.

5. Michelle By: Sir Chloe

The lyrics in Michelle by Sir Chloe brings you through a story of two girls, the singer Chloe speaks holding a tone of yearning and love for Michelle but for whatever reason insists that she’s a “monster from hell”. This can be interpreted in many ways, but from the perspective of a sapphic girl living in the closet or with unsupportive peers and family it can speak to her altered view of someone she loves, seeing her as a monster for the way she ‘makes you’ love her although this love is something that will ultimately bring obstacles into your life.

7. Why Didn’t I Kiss Her By: RatWyfe

This song reads like a storybook walking you through a forest with two girls, one of which is in love with the other but unsure how to go about it. RatWyfe, the artist, brings you along with her internal monologue where she contemplates and replays the scenario in her head you feel your tension build with hers as she sings “I'll grab her by her hands, look in her eyes. Move in close to her, then realize my palms are sweaty. I'm holding my breath, my mind's unsteady and my cheeks have gone red and I'll pull away and later I'll ask why- why didn't I kiss hеr”.

8. A love like war By: All Time Low

All if not most lgbt+ love can be seen as A Love Like War. It’s not easy, and sometimes you have to fight for the freedom to simply love, but in the end it is always worth the war. The war in your head, the war with those close to you, or even complete strangers hung on the idea that anyone else’s love is their business. It’s worth it in the end when you find the person who makes you feel as if your hearts on fire tonight and your bones ignite, as mentioned in the song.

9. For Him By: Troy Sivan

A member of the lgbtqa+ community can lose friends, family, even their homes or jobs when choosing to express openly their true selves. In ‘For Him’, Troye Sivan sings “We've been making shades of purple out of red and blue. Sickeningly sweet like honey, don't need money, all I need is you.” this speaks volumes about how little everything else means when it’s sacrificed for the freedom to be with the person you truly love.

10. Baby Boy By: Kevin Anstract

Sexuality, gender expression, and romantic orientation are a growing process. The best part being you’re never done growing and discovering yourself! It is not always easy, and at times it may hurt which is beautifully conveyed in Baby Boy, which touches on the growing pain that coming to terms with new aspects of yourself brings. Kevin Abstract intros with “Every time I find myself I feel so lost, And every truth that I discover feels so false.” wonderfully conveying the feeling of being lost although you feel as if you’ve found yourself. The truth is you can have many truths, and selves. Being a part of the lgbtqa+ community is a constant state of self discovery and breaking down new walls you may not have even known existed.
