Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as Delta-9THC, has been used since the 1970s for the treatment of a variety of ailments. Two of the most common ailments treated with this substance are cancer and glaucoma. Although marijuana is considered relatively safe by many, it is still dangerous to consume on a regular basis. With marijuana use on the rise across the country, the debate on whether or not this substance abuse is becoming widespread enough is important for policy makers to consider.

THC is one of the two main chemicals in marijuana that have been found to have the least severe side effects when used consistently over a long period of time. For example, most people who use marijuana only experience an occasional "bad trip," if that, and these trips usually do not include a major change in behavior. Patients with glaucoma can experience a change in vision as well as an increase in pain tolerance and alertness. In some patients, there is a possibility of an increased appetite, but most do not report experiencing any side effects with Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. On the other hand, people who abuse marijuana frequently may find that they have poorer appetite control and suffer from constant nausea and vomiting.

Doctors often recommend that patients who are considering using marijuana begin with a low dose. Studies have shown that even heavy users begin with a lower dose. Medical professionals believe that chronic use of delta 9 that can cause a shift in brain chemistry which may result in a temporary decrease in the patient's ability to control their bodily functions. Doctors may then recommend increasing the amount of this drug in order to achieve the desired results. Unfortunately, often times this means increasing the patient's risk of serious side effects.

The primary metabolite of this drug is delta 9-tetrahydrocannabis. It is believed that when this substance passes into the brain it acts like a powerful stimulant. This is known to produce psychological and physical effects such as euphoria, calmness and mood elevation. However, these same substances are also believed to contribute to the development of mental illnesses, including depression, psychosis and schizophrenia.

The primary psychoactive effects of cannabis come in two forms. The first, known as delta-9-THC, is the main component found in marijuana. The second form, called delta-8-THC, is another component found in cannabis. People who consume cannabis regularly can develop a dependency on this substance, which means that they must consume a significantly large amount of cannabis in order to maintain the same high level of mental clarity that they experienced during the earlier stages of their addiction.

Scientists and physicians are conducting studies that indicate that marijuana may also have some medicinal benefits. Many people believe that medical marijuana can help alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy, for example. However, scientists are unable to determine whether or not delta 9 THC is effective in battling cancer. There are currently no trials currently underway to investigate the medicinal aspects of delta 9 THC. For the time being, the medicinal benefits attributed to marijuana are considered purely anecdotal.

However, despite the lack of concrete evidence regarding the efficacy of delta 9 THC and other psychoactive drugs, delta 8-THC has emerged as a favorite among many advocates of natural herbal medicine. The apparent effectiveness of this substance has prompted many websites to offer free samples of this natural herbal remedy. It is believed that this substance acts on the central nervous system to relieve nausea and to reduce coughing. It is also believed that the substance helps to alleviate the uncomfortable side effects of chemotherapy treatment by reducing the need for nausea. These medical claims are supported by a number of scientific studies that have been conducted by organizations such as the National Institute on Drug Abuse. However, many of these same studies were conducted using placebo subjects, which indicate that the results of these studies are not reliable.

The primary psychoactive component of marijuana, or cannabis, also has a therapeutic value. However, its therapeutic potential is not as strong as that of delta 9 THC. This is because delta 9 THC, like most other psychoactive substances, is thought to act on CB receptors, which have fewer receptors than CB1, the primary psychoactive receptor. If the efficacy of delta 9 THC is limited to those patients whose CB1 receptors have been damaged, it is unlikely that this substance would be of any benefit in treating chronic diseases such as cancer and glaucoma.
