The stoner generation is upon us, growing day by day and toke by toke. As of 2018, a total of 29 states passed a ballot to legalize the use of medical marijuana. Within these rules are possession limits which are as follows: 1 ounce of marijuana, 6 plants per household, and up to 1 ounce of hash and concentrates. To all cannabis users, this is a dream. You can now relax after a hard day of work and smoke a joint or two on your couch, or by the pool, or with your friends without the paranoia of getting caught.

However, it is a known fact that smoking your daily joint or morning bong toke can result in consequences—red eyes, cotton mouth, laziness, and an extreme case of the munchies. To the active cannabis smoker, this is no surprise, but to non-supporters, this may become an issue, which is why strategies to hide your high are important.

In the cannabis community, smoking weed is a lifestyle. The benefits of medical marijuana (and recreational too!) outweigh the negatives. But, to be respectful towards others. especially around children and the workplace, one is faced with the challenge of masking their high. Strategies can range from using eye drops to wearing sunglasses and everything in-between. Here is a list of the best ways that you can hide your high around other people

Use eye drops.

Clear Eyes, Rohto V, Visine—these are all names of your new best friends and one of the stoner travel must haves, remember them! Although smoking cannabis is one of the best gifts on this planet, there is also a downside. One of the most common and most obvious side effects of ingesting cannabis is bloodshot eyes, which is a dead giveaway. Why does this happen? To put it simply, when cannabis is consumed, there is a decrease in inner-eye pressure which allows your blood vessels in your eyes to dilate. Therefore, blood rushes in and your eyes swell up causing redness and puffiness.

Luckily, these eye drops have been helping smokers remain inconspicuous for years. Take a trip to your local drug store and stock up on these because you will need them in the near future.

Brush your teeth.

This is a strategy that is often overlooked, but is extremely helpful and important. After smoking cannabis, the smell stays on your tongue and the roof of your mouth. The last thing you want is showing up at a meeting and your breath smelling like pure marijuana or all of the munchies you just ate. It will only take a couple minutes of your time, but you will thank yourself later. Brush your teeth before you leave the house and notice how much more confident you when you have to hide your high around other people.

Wear perfume or cologne.

Jess Waters

This is probably the most obvious and common strategy you can use to hide that lingering cannabis smell, but don’t overdo it. When smoking weed, whether it’s a joint, a bong or a vape, the smell attaches itself to your clothes. If you’re at home, this is not a problem because you can easily change into new clothes. However, not all smokers have the luxury of smoking in the safety of their own home.

To save yourself from getting those stares and double takes, keep a small bottle of perfume in your car or in your bag and give yourself a couple of sprays here and there. People will approach you much more if you smell like daisies than if you smell like cannabis.

Wear sunglasses.

Ivana Cajina

Whether it’s the free pair of sunglasses you get at a company’s work party or the expensive Ray Bans you just bought for yourself, throw those babies on and let your eyes relax. This is a great alternative if your eyes are sensitive to eye drops. If you are spending your day outside, you will look as normal as everyone else and you can avoid explaining why your eyes are so bloodshot. Not to mention you will also look fashionable!

Stop talking.

Let’s say you went on your hour long lunch break and smoked a joint to calm your nerves the rest of your work day. When you get back, your boss calls you into a department meeting. You are freaking out because you know that you cannot form a correct sentence when you are stoned.

The best way to avoid this is to keep calm, act normal, and simply stop talking. Do not let a single sentence slip out of your mouth because that might just trigger an array of questions your way. Instead of talking nonsense, don’t talk at all. The last thing you want to do while you’re high is explain yourself incoherently to a group of your colleagues.

Focus on something... anything.

Porapak Apichodilok

When cannabis takes control, it is easy to get lost in a train of thought and drift away into silence. You sit there with your mouth wide open looking into an abyss and just seem straight out stoned. This is very common among the stoner community.

The best thing you can do in this case is try to look normal and focus on something. Anything. Take out your phone and scroll through Instagram, read a book, or turn on the television. Anything that will bring your attention to one subject will seem normal to everyone around you, even though in your mind you know you are far from that.

Take a shower.

It’s as simple as that. Showers can wash away anything. For one, you can relax after you smoke and you come out of the shower smelling clean, reducing eye redness and straight out just feeling good. Before you run out of your house after a fresh bowl, hop in the shower, turn on the hot water and wash all of your worries away.

Keep water with you.

i love simple beyond

Whether you're thirsty or not, keep a water bottle with you at all times. Take sips here and there to avoid cotton mouth and become inconspicuous. If you feel awkward, you can hold onto your water bottle and fiddle with it instead of twiddling your thumbs in a high state of mind. This strategy is often overlooked, but will definitely help you hide your high around other people.

Use the "I'm tired" excuse.

Min An

Before anybody can accuse you of being high based off of your red eyes and sluggish motions, simply give the excuse that you are tired. It is the simplest thing to do and takes little to no effort. If it's your mother, boss, colleague or person sitting in front of you on the metro, yawn and close your eyes to avoid any accusation.

Hide your stash.

Thought Catalog

In order to hide your high around other people, one must do the simplest of all things—hide your stash! That means everything. Your bong, papers, grinder and cannabis. This will keep you from smelling like weed and from giving yourself away under any circumstance. Leave it at home in any of the best smell proof containers, hide it in your car, or give it to a friend. Nobody wants you rolling up to their house or to work smelling like a marijuana dispensary.
