For the past three decades, researchers have been investigating the effects of CBD on anxiety. The latest research by Dr. David D’Agostino and colleagues at Duke University Medical Center are perhaps the most exciting findings since they found that injecting rats with CBD made them stop licking their wounds to keep them clean. Another study by the same team found that the CBD reduces the rats’ stress responses, making them less anxious.

The researchers believe that the CBD binds directly to cannabinoid receptors in the spinal cord, immune system, brain and central nervous system, which are up to 8%, whereas only 2% of the population has this type of receptor. They also found that these receptors are present in areas that regulate anxiety in response to things that are not pleasant, such as infection and ischemia. In other words, they believe that CBD might help the nervous system to calm and rest.

However, the most exciting finding of this study has to do with the possible anxiolytics side effects. While the rats’ anxiety was reduced, it was found that this reduction was reversed by either the CBD or the benzodiazepines. In other words, the rats were anxious in both experimental conditions and had no problem relaxing and calming down, even if they did receive the opioids. The researchers think that the benzodiazepines reduce anxiety by regulating the stress response, which has a positive feedback loop on the increase in anxiety.

The CBD’ effect on the opioid system would be to make the nervous system less hyperactive, which is similar to the effect of a typical anti-anxiety medication. The CBD’ anxiolytic effects were accompanied by no change in the rats’ behaviors or immune responses, which suggests that the anxiolysis effects are secondary to the reduction in anxiety. The researchers suggest that the CBD might be useful in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder by providing long-term anxiolysis by reducing anxiety without any of the side effects that come with benzodiazepines and SSRIs.

There is still no general consensus in the scientific community on the benefits of cannabidiol in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Although most researchers agree that cannabidiol can be helpful in decreasing anxiety by improving brain connectivity in rodents for example, it is still very difficult to take the same practice to humans. The reason for this is that the same experiment was only performed in rats and not humans. Moreover, the experiment had to be repeated over hundreds of injections, and it is not yet known if the same effects can be obtained by repeated administration of cannabidiol.
