Zip Me Up

Like my Mother on a Snowy Day

By Celeste FrenettePublished 10 months ago • 1 min read

The grass is a winter coat

Kneeling down, I unzip it

Reach my hands deep into the soil

Feeling for the bottom of the hardened, weathered roots

Clenching them firmly and lifting with all of my might

Opening, peeling back the grass

I climb inside and lay my soul bare on the muddy earth

Pulling the grass over me, I whisper to her

Zip me up like my mother on a snowy day

I want to remember what it is to be safe

Let me feel the condensation on my upper lip

Let me breathe in the warmth of the land

As it welcomes me home
