Your World Is Upside Down

The more it’s turning you

At times it’s like the day is never going to end

You’ve never done enough, there’s more to do,

Pressure, stress, overwhelming panic attack

Hidden well, no one would ever have a clue.

***

Still the day drags on, the night not beginning

Hoping ferociously for the world to slumber,

At times like these it’s impossible to stay on top

The pressures far outweigh and outnumber.

***

Your biggest fears and most horrific nightmares

Ensured you were afraid of the darkening night,

However, while they once hid in the dark hours

To your horror, they are thriving in the daylight.

***

Everything is wrong in your greatest nightmares

The sound of weeping is mistaken for laughter,

So sadness and pain is erroneously taken as fun

Sadistic horror and gore is your happily ever after.

***

You feel you are happy whereby you’re in turmoil

As the lines blur between nightmare and dreams,

You’ve been turned upside down, inside and out

Finding it difficult to tell the difference, it seems.

***

As a final kicker to top off the horror happiness

Your heartache, that was once sleeping quietly,

Has woken with a terrible roar, loudly screaming

Refusing to settle, begins to beat you defiantly.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
