your presence
and the way it saved me

The night was a python, wrapped around my ribs squeezing and squeezing and squeezing. I gasped and cried and screamed and you seemed to be the only one who ever heard.
The melancholy was my death sentence but you kept me from the gallows. Nobody will ever know how much I craved the end, but you barred the way and promised new beginnings.
When every other light flickered out, yours never did. When the darkness drowned out everything else, it never managed to quench you.
You are the only reason I made it to tomorrow. The reason I learnt to love the sunrise. When all the tunnels threatened to end in gloom, you stood at the end of each one glowing.
You held my hand every time it reached for self-destruction, rewrote all my insecurities, transformed them into something softer and easier to breathe around.
I know it hurt you to see me suffocating in darkness, but because of you I reached the sun.
