Your Angel's Wings

Are Broken

Horizontal scars run up and down her arms

A visual and painful tapestry of cuts to ease her pain

Her majestic silver-tipped wings show so much wear and tear

And the feathers are falling out

From banging and struggling against the cage you keep her in

Her trilling, beautiful voice

That used to sing you to sleep at night

Has become harsh, hoarse and gravely

From too many bottles of Jack Daniels

She has downed to ease the pain and

From the desire to escape the cage you keep her in

Her thirst for freedom is unquenchable

But her Angel’s wings are shattered and broken

She can no longer escape

She is covered with so many scars

That are beautiful in their pain

She is so broken now

And you want her love back

The love she once gave you willingly, freely and unconditionally

But love cannot be owned, caged or thwarted

With our human need to hold on so tight

Her gown is dirty and worn from the filth

In the neglected, stifling world you have forced her into

Her spirit is broken from the weight

Of the chains you tie her down with

She wants her freedom

That you cannot bring yourself to allow her

You think you are protecting her

Keeping her from harm in the cage you think is love

And your possessive obsession to be her only one

Your Angel’s wings are broken

And covered with so many scars
