You Are You (Beautiful You)

A poem/song for the girls who still suffer from the stains of purity culture.

As a little girl

I was told I was a pearl

Who needed to keep myself

Clean and pure.

We were compared to used cars

And spit-on candy bars,

Told us that if we gave it up,

We'd be called a whore.

/

Yet boys are told

That their urges are normal

And to chase after girls

Is their right.

Boys will be boys,

And girls will be their toys,

But when the girls fight back,

They act so surprised.

/

Those type of men want to marry virgins

But expect vixens after the wedding bells rung...

And those type of men will blame the women

When their dick was the weapon...

It's the same damn cycle overdone.

/

This is for the girls

Being told that their worth

Is less than what's under their skirts...

This is for the women

Told that they are sinning

Because they share a little skin and flirt:

You are the only one

Who owns your body.

No preacher or politician

Can tell you nothing.

You are the only one

Who owns your body.

You are you

Beautiful you.

/

Remember when they said

It was Eve's fault when she bit

Into the fruit

Which damned us all?

I rather be like Lilith,

And say 'Fuck this whole business!'

Why base your morals on a myth?

I'd rather go to hell.

/

They'll call little girls

Stumbling blocks

But won't call out the wandering cocks

Of perverts in power.

They'll say God will forgive them

Lead us from temptation

A perfect scapegoat

To cover up the cowards.

/

This is for the girls

Being told that their worth

Is less than what's under their skirts...

This is for the women

Told that they are sinning

Because they share a little skin and flirt:

You are the only one

Who owns your body.

No preacher or politician

Can tell you nothing.

You are the only one

Who owns your body.

You are you

Beautiful you.

/

They'll try and try

With all their might

To put the chains back on.

They're so desperate

And obsessed with

This game they think they won.

God may have given you dominion,

But we ain't giving you nothing.

God may have given you dominion,

But we ain't giving you nothing.

/

This is for the girls

Tired of all the hateful words

From men saying we're not worth it.

This is for the women

Tired of being victim,

And blamed for our own hurt.

You are the only one

Who owns your body.

No god or senator

Can you tell you nothing.

You are the only one

Who owns your body.

You are you.

Beautiful you.
